Melvin "STONE" D. Jordan

Melvin D. “STONE” Jordan, 64, of Springfield, died at 9:50 p.m. on Monday, September 6, 2021, at his residence. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. Melvin loved God and others. He was a faithful servant who loved to worship and sing praises to God. He continued to serve God in good health and through sickness till the very end.

Melvin was born on September 7, 1956, in Murphysboro, IL, the son of Edward Jordan, Sr. and Alma Johnson Jordan. He married the “love of his life” Martha D. Adams on July 11, 1992, in Springfield.

Melvin was a Murphysboro High School graduate. He continued to be active in the community of Murphysboro by once serving as the parade Grand Marshall for the Apple Festival and dreamed of one day being the Mayor of Murphysboro. Melvin attended college and played football at Mississippi Valley State University. He retired from the IL State Board of Education as a Computer Programmer after 34 years. Melvin believed education was imperative and took the time to introduce students to the possibility of higher education. He served as a classroom parent and a member of the Springfield School District #186 Real Men Read program. He also coached and mentored football players for many years at Springfield High School and Lanphier High School and was a Cy Young Little League coach. As a very active member of the Springfield community, Melvin received many awards and accolades for community service. He also held several positions, including Chaplain, within the Central Masonic Lodge #3 F & AM, PHA, Menelik Consistory #49, AASR, NJ, PHA (Grand Inspector General). He was also an active member of the Springfield-IL Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Melvin was also very involved within his church. He was installed as a Deacon under the pastorship of Rev. Dr. Charles Tiner, Sr. He was a phenomenal praise & worship leader and choir member. Melvin faithfully oversaw the Illinois State Board of Education Summer Food Service Program at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. He was a mentor and Godparent to many.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Peter Bruce Jordan, Edward Jordan Jr., and Leroy Jordan.

He is survived by his “lucky” wife, Martha D. Jordan; two sons, Odarian D. Jordan and Quentin L. Jordan; two sisters, Margaret Griffin and Linda Jordan; a beloved mother-in-law, Enora Morris; and several in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Melvin was loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021, at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 1800 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr., Springfield. Visitation will conclude with Fraternity and Masonic ceremonies, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings and social distancing.

Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: An additional visitation will be held from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Union Baptist Church, 1405 East Monroe St., Springfield. A Funeral Ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. T. Ray McJunkins and Rev. Silas Johnson officiating. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings and social distancing. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
