Michael David Dougherty passed away on December 2, 2025, in Greenville, South Carolina, at the age of 77. Born on September 29, 1948, in Springfield, Illinois, he was the youngest son of John Alan Dougherty and Nita Marie Bottorff.
A proud U.S. Marine, Michael served two combat tours during the Vietnam conflict. He bore the scars of war with quiet strength and unwavering resilience, honored with the Combat Action Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the Vietnam Service Medal with five campaign stars.
With a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from New York City College, Michael began his career in the paper industry in New Jersey. Witnessing the harmful effects of the caustic glue used in corrugated box manufacturing, he developed a non-toxic corn starch adhesive and designed a large-scale mixing system for industrial use. As owner of TransCor, Ltd., based in New York, he installed his systems across the U.S. and Europe. Later he worked as Director of Engineering for HCL in South Florida. After 10 years in Florida, he retired to South Carolina, where he spent his final years.
Michael is survived by his wife, Deanna Dougherty; daughter, Alexa Kaufman; son-in-law, Dan Kaufman; and grandson, Miles Kaufman—all of Florida. He is also survived by his brothers, John Dougherty of Tennessee and Pat Dougherty of Missouri; sister, Natalie Last of Florida; and niece, Stacey Cook of North Carolina.
His deepest calling was to support his fellow veterans. He was a devoted member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Disabled Veterans of America. Honoring his wish, Michael will be laid to rest with military honors at Camp Butler National Cemetery on April 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
