Michael V. "Big Mike" Zrillic, 88, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at St. John's Hospital. Mike was born February 10, 1921 in Zeigler, the son of Katie Milynoe Zrillic. He married Elizabeth V. Golab on August 29, 1945 at St. Aloysius in Springfield. After graduating from Lanphier High School, Mike served his country in the United States Army. He later spent his life working for GM&O railroad and then farmed after his retirement; also selling mixed birdseed and ears of corn to the public for feeding squirrels. Mike had a soft spot for animals, taking in every stray cat and dog he found and attending farm auctions. Preceding Mike in death are his brothers, sisters, and parents. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Springfield; his daughter, Betty (husband, Ed) Ritter of Springfield; granddaughter, Christina (husband, Jeff) Bax of Springfield; great-grandchildren, Baylee and Nicholas Bax; sister-in-law, Sophia Geyston of Springfield; and many nieces, and nephews. Family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th, Springfield. A funeral ceremony will follow at 11:00 a.m with Rev. Msgr John R. Ossola officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with the United States Army providing military honors.
