

She was born January 28, 1942, in Springfield, the daughter of William Earl and Gertrude Irene (Whymer) Hawkins. She married Frank D. Dunkus Jr. on March 17, 1973, at Third Presbyterian Church and enjoyed 49 years of marriage until he preceded her in death on August 21, 2022.
Also preceding her in death were her parents, a stepson, Michael Dunkus, and two sisters, Dolores Griffin and Phyllis Dunn, and her two feline companions, Oreo and Cookie.
Mrs. Dunkus was a graduate of Springfield High School, class of 1960. She was an Administrative Assistant with City Water Light and Power for 37 years, retiring on January 6, 1998.
Nancy was a member of the Illinois League of Municipal Employees, a former member of the Abraham Lincoln Chapter of the National Secretaries Association, and a former board member of the IMRF (Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund).
Surviving is her daughter, Melinda “Mindy” (husband James) Glenn Jr. of Sherman, IL, her stepdaughter, Michelle “Shelly” Walker of LaSalle, IL, her granddaughter, Brittany (Austin Kuizin) Glenn of Chatham, IL, and her grandson, Christopher (wife April) Hood of Belleville, IL. Several nieces and nephews.
Nancy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who was sweet, kind, loving, and fun. Family and friends will greatly miss her personality and smile. She enjoyed attending music concerts, shopping, traveling, dancing, playing bingo, and taking casino trips. Nancy was active and found joy in water volleyball and Wii bowling, she had the opportunity to participate in the Senior Olympics in 2022. She spent a lot of time knitting, crocheting, and sitting on her porch enjoying the birds and flowers. During the holidays she liked decorating and baking. She always loved taking care of family pets.
Arrangements are in the care of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd, Springfield, IL. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Chaplain Jeff Harter will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
