

Norman L Willis, Sr., 92, of Springfield died at 4:25 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at St. John's Hospice. Norman was born May 6, 1922 in Springfield, the son of Samuel LaRue and Fannie Day Willis. He married Irene Jamerson on March 8, 1947 in Belleville, IL. Norman was a graduate of Feitshans High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Norman retired from Illinois Bell in 1982 after 31 years of service. He also had a snow removal and landscaping business. Norman loved music and played trombone in the Springfield Municipal Band. He had a 16 piece band at one time. Norman was the treasurer of Musicians Local #675. He was a member of St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church and a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council 4179. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James Willis; and one grandson, Norman (Dewey) A. Willis. Norman is survived by his wife, Irene Willis of Springfield; one son, Norman, Jr. (Carol) Willis of Dawson; two grandchildren, Anthony Willis (Linda Stephenson) and Marcie Willis, both of Springfield; one great-grandson; his faithful, furry companion Joe; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Mass: 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014 at St. Katharine Drexel Parish at St. Patrick Church, 1720 S. Grand Ave. East, Springfield, with Fr. John Nolan celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and Department of Defense.
