

Richard L. Leverton, 69, of Springfield, passed away at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at his home surrounded by his daughters. Richard was born on January 20, 1950, in Canton, IL, the son of Dale and Beulah Burnett Leverton. He married Helen Rhodes on December 1, 1973, at Spring Hill Church; she preceded him in death on January 26, 2019. Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was employed as a mechanic for several area automobile shops including, Sears, Giuffre Buick, Mazda, and Brad Reagan Tires. Richard then went to work for the State of Illinois as a Highway Maintainer until his retirement after 15 years of service. He was a member of the Northenders VFW Post 10302 and was a devoted husband and father. Richard was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed taking his 1963 Chevy Impala to car shows. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Howard; and sister, Helen Scott. He is survived by his daughters, Dawn (Bob) Vicari of Springfield and Amanda (Scott) Lahr of Taylorville; two grandchildren, William Lahr and Brodi Kiesow; step-grandchildren, Brett and Valerie Vicari and Jake Lahr; step-great-grandchildren, Karson Readus and Avery Lahr; siblings, Jim (wife, Esther) Leverton of CA, Joann Hartman of IN, Ronnie (wife, Donna) Leverton of FL, Patsy (husband, Coach) Schmidt of AZ, and Terry Leverton of GA; brother-in-law, Bob Scott of Pleasant Plains; sisters-in-law, Mary Leverton of Petersburg and Marilyn Leverton of TX; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at Butler Funeral Home -Springfield, 900 South 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2750 E. Sangamon Ave., Springfield with Rev. Samuel Janssen officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and Department of Defense.
