

Robert was born October 9, 1917, in Coles County, IL, the son of John I. and Elizabeth McDougal Magill. He married Helen R. Roy September 13, 1941 in Springfield.
Robert was in the U.S. Navy during WWII; and was a LT. Commander on USS Missouri; he was an official greeter for the Japanese Surrender aboard the USS Missouri.
Robert was a 1946 graduate of University of Illinois Law School. He was a founding member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Robert was an attorney with the law firm of Rhoades, Magill, Magill, and Ray; and later became partner with Brown, Hay, and Stephens; he practiced law for over 50 years.
He was past President of Sangamon County Bar Association and the Downtown Kiwanis Club. In September 2007, he was recognized as a Pillar of The Bar by the Illinois State Bar Association. He enjoyed gardening, tennis, and spending time with family.
He is survived his wife, Helen Roy Magill; five sons: James L. (Beth Collins), Jeffrey (Anne), Mark G., all of Springfield, R. Michael (Barbara) of Freeburg, IL, Thomas J. (Elyse) of Riverwoods, IL and three daughters: Mary Ann “Molly” (Jeff) Fortuna of Louisville, Co., Ida Elizabeth (David) Gibans of Golden, Co. and Kathryn Morgan of Lakewood, Co., one sister, Joan Liechty of Provo, Utah; twenty grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family welcomes friends to visit from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 29, 2007 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1930 Barberry Drive, Springfield. The visitation will begin with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at Christ the King Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz celebrant.
Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
