

Roy C. Greenwood, 91, a long-time resident of Springfield, passed away at St. John’s Hospital Hospice on Saturday, March 12, 2011.
Roy was born on December 27, 1919 in Wayne County, TN., the son of Jerry C. and Lena Mae (Stephenson) Greenwood. The Greenwood family moved to Pawnee, Illinois, where Roy graduated from Pawnee High School in 1937. Roy served in the United States Air Force from August 1940 to October 1945. He spent thirty-seven months in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands during World War II as an airplane mechanic. Roy was awarded the American Defense Ribbon and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon for his service. He later served in the National Guard, from March 1951 to August 1952.
After his honorable discharge from military service, Roy married Dorothy Reeve in St. Louis, Missouri, on November 5, 1945. They had been married for 61 years at the time of Dorothy’s death in September 2007.
Roy worked at the United States Postal Service for 24 years. He retired in February 1983. He was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was also a member of St. Paul’s Lodge #500 AF & AM, the Springfield Consistory Ansar Shriners Temple.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 18, 2011 at 10:00 am in Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee, with the Rev. Flo Scott officiating.
