

Ruby M. Waters, 97, of Springfield, died at 4:13 a.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at Heritage Health in Springfield. Ruby was born February 11, 1921, in Edinburg, the daughter of John Ruby and Mable M. Patton Privott. She married Henry Edward Waters on June 14, 1941, in Springfield; he preceded her in death in 1986. Ruby graduated from Edinburg High School and was employed as a secretary at the Edinburg Grade School for a couple of years. She then went on to work for the U.S. Selective Service until her retirement. Ruby was a member of Christ the King Parish. She enjoyed volunteering at the Springfield Muni, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library, Lincoln Memorial Gardens, and the Springfield Theatre Center. She also enjoyed knitting and needlepoint, playing BINGO, and reading. Ruby adored her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She looked forward to every gathering, especially for the holidays when her chicken and noodles were the most requested dish. Ruby was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Jack Waters; and sister, Margaret Sharp. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Short of Bloomington; daughter-in-law, Nancy Waters of Springfield; grandchildren, Susan Short Edwards of Atlanta, GA, Linda Short of Santa Fe, NM, Julie (husband, Sean) Flynn of Edwardsville, and Kimberly (husband, Joe) Saab of Camdenton, MO; seven great-grandchildren, Alex and Andrew Edwards, Carter, Lilly, and Hudson Saab, and Aiden and Riley Flynn; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Graveside Ceremony will follow at Calvary Cemetery with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Parish, 1930 Barberry, Springfield, IL 62704.
