

Sister Mary Anne Frederick, OSU, 98, formerly of Springfield, died peacefully on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at the Ursuline Infirmary in Alton. Sr. Mary Anne was born June 24, 1907 in Falls City, Nebraska, the daughter of William and Ida Bauman Frederick. Sr. Mary Anne, baptized Grace, was the oldest of 12 children. She entered the Ursuline Order on January 1, 1926 and made her first vows July 3, 1928 in Beacon, NY. Upon returning to the Midwest, she continued her education at Creighton University in Omaha leaving early every Saturday morning on the train to Omaha and returning that evening. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Louis University and a Master’s Degree from DePaul University in Chicago. During her years in the education ministry, Sr. Mary Anne taught in Sacred Heart School, Falls City, NE for 13 years, and in St. Aloysius School, Springfield, IL for 18 years. She also taught at Blessed Sacrament and St. Joseph Schools in Springfield, at St. Boniface in Perryville, St. Peter’s in Kirkwood, Immaculate Conception in Arnold, Corpus Christi in Jennings, Sacred Heart in Festus, Assumption in Herculaneum, all in Missouri. She served for a short time in Laredo, TX as well. In 1998, she celebrated 70 years as an Ursuline. She loved art and poetry and until her illness had an extensive correspondence with family and friends. She was preceded in death by five brothers: Paul, Ambrose, Giles, Virgil and William Frederick and two sisters: Mildred M. Carlisle and Mary E. McCurdy. She is survived by three sisters: Irene H. Austin, Dolores Ann Austin and Barbara Wolfe; one brother: Lawrence E. “Dick” Frederick; and her Ursuline Sisters. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am – 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St. Springfield. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springfield with Msgr. John Ossola celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ursuline Infirmary, 845 Danforth St., Alton, IL 62002.
