Sr. Jane Like, OSF

Sister Jane Like, 92, of the Hospital Sisters of the third Order of St. Francis died on Saturday, July 23, 2005 at noon at St. Francis Convent, Springfield, Illinois. Sister Jane, the former Madonna Alice Like, was born in Farina, IL (Fayette County) on March 24, 1913, the daughter of John and Johanna Kramer Like. She entered the Congregation on September 8, 1937, and professed her religious vows on June 13, 1940. She was a graduate of Columbus Hospital School of Nursing on August 20, 1935, prior to her entrance into religious life. She served the community as a nurse at hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin. From 1947 until 1975 she served as administrator in a variety of locations: St. Joseph’s Home for the Infirm & Aged in Monroe, LA; St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur, IL; St. Joseph’s Hospital, Highland, IL; and St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, IL. Sister Jane also served as local coordinator for the religious community in Decatur. For five years (1977-1982) she served as pastoral minister at St. Thomas Church, Decatur, IL. She also served as a core member of the House of Prayer in Henry, IL, from 1983-1985. She retried to the Motherhouse in 1992. She was listed in the 37th edition (1972) of Who’s Who in America and inducted into the Decatur Hall of Fame in 1988. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ester Vogel, Florence Metzger and Johanna Behl and one brother, Matthias Like. She is survived by several nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews and her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared her life for years. Visitation will be held at the Motherhouse from 4-7:00 p.m. with a Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 25, 2005. The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Andre Schludecker OFM on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Clare’s Adoration Chapel at the Motherhouse. Burial will be in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery. The family and Franciscan Sisters of Sister Jane Like are being served by Kirin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield.
