Stephen Lee "Sarge" Richardson, Sr.

Stephen Lee. “Sarge” Richardson Sr. 72, lifelong resident of Springfield, passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born on January 6, 1942, the son of the late John and Josephine (Detamore) Richardson. Stephen was a proud and devoted family man; he especially loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Sarge proudly devoted 33 years of his life serving our country in the Army, retiring in 1991. He served in the 108th Sustainment Brigade, the 232 Supply & Service, and 1144thTransportation. He was stationed at State Headquarters 900 Mash. Sarge enjoyed cooking for his fellow troops during his military career, and for many years after for family and friends.

Outside of and after his military service, Stephen worked on the ambulance service at Bisch and Kirlin & Eagan Funeral Homes. He was able to see most of our beautiful country as a tour bus driver for Marie’s Tours in Bethany, IL, and Smith Bus in Taylorville. Over the years Sarge also managed several service stations. He was a member of Moose Lodge 684 in Decatur.

Surviving Stephen is his daughter Suzette (David) Fahrenbacher of Springfield, his sons; Stephen L. Richardson Jr. of Virden, and Randal Payton of Arnold, MO, 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, his sister Cora Summers of Springfield, and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death were his grandparents Joseph and Oma Detamore, a son Ron Range, brother-in-law George Summers, niece Connie Jo Summers, and great-niece Shannon West.

Bisch & Son Funeral Home 505 E Allen St Springfield, IL, 62703 is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive guests on Monday, November 3, 2014, from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at 10:30 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be performed.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Senior Services of Central Illinois.
