

Vincent W. Johnson, 86, of Springfield, died at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at St. John's Hospital. Vincent was born June 11, 1929 in Sorento, the son of Orla Jay and Mabel Molloy Johnson. Vincent attended Sorento Grade School and graduated from St. Agnes Grade School and Cathedral Boys High School in Springfield. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and received his master's degree in Public Administration from Sangamon State University. Vincent served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in France during the Korean Conflict. He was a very proud veteran. He was the Chief Fiscal Officer for Local Government State Affairs and retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs, where he was an Internal Auditor. Vincent was an active member and held various offices in the 40&8 Voiture Locale #344, VFW #755, Korean War Veterans, American Legion Post #32 in Springfield and Virden, NRA, and was a Kentucky Colonel. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, traveling, especially to Paris and Lourdes, France, genealogy, reading, fishing, and Notre Dame and Fighting Illini football. He was preceded in death by his parents and six sisters, Geraldine Davis, Gertrude Tidwell, June Hubbard, Esther Snyder, Vera Strothmann, and Anna Massetti. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Stannard of Springfield; several nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews; and he was a friend of 76 years to Brother Tom Bracco, S.J. of Santa Clara, CA. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Christ the King Parish, 1930 Barberry, Springfield, with Rev. Joseph Ring celebrant. Burial will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery in Sorento, with military honors provided by the Department of Defense.
