

Violet L. Dietrich, 95, of Springfield, died at 9:55 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at her residence. Violet was born on April 22, 1911, in Fancy Prairie, IL, the daughter of John and Edith Sparks Smith. She married Gilbert L. Dietrich in 1930 in Springfield; he preceded her in death on December 12, 1984. She retired in 1986 from the Illinois Department of Revenue, after many years as a claims adjudicator. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. Violet was past president of the Altar and Rosary Society of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, a past member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Madonna Court #148 and of the Springfield Art Association. She was a life member of the Springfield Motor Boat Club. Violet loved flower gardening and will be remembered for her water skiing and how along with her husband, they taught most of their children and grandchildren to ski at the Boat Club. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one sister: Goldie Whiteman; one brother Gerald Smith; one granddaughter: Infant Mary Catherine Dietrich and two great-granddaughters. She is survived by three daughters: Mary Susan Dietrich of Springfield, Nancy Slack of Champaign, and Dorthy Brooks of Jacksonville; one son: Dr. John (wife, Pat) Dietrich of Springfield; fifteen grandchildren: Mark (wife, Dee) Slack of White Heath, Michael Slack of Travelers Rest, SC, Pamela Schumacher of Champaign, Bruce Slack of Chester, Stephanie (husband, Michael) Martin of Champaign, Thomas (companion, Venus Walker) Slack of Bondville, John (wife, Gail) Slack of Fort Collins, CO, Brenda (husband, Thomas) Addy of Cascade, WI, Robert (wife, Kelli) Brooks of Jacksonville, Barbara (husband, Jeffery) Atwood of Virginia, Bradley Brooks of Lincoln, Matthew (wife, Laura) Dietrich, of Springfield, Sarah (husband, Louis) Yockey of Springfield, Angela (husband, WD) Brafford of Virginia Beach, VA and Daniel Dietrich of Chicago and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Cremation accorded by the Cremation Tribute Center, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2006 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2006 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Rev. Donald Hoefler celebrant. Burial will follow at Fancy Creek Cemetery.
