

Wallace M. "Wally" Hirstein, 87, of Springfield, passed away at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010 at St. John's Hospice. Wally was born December 28, 1922, the son of Albert R. and Flora Ward Hirstein. He married Edna McGovern on February 4, 1947 in Springfield. Wally served his country proudly in the U.S. Army serving in WWII in eight out of ten European Theatres. He received the Bronze Star and Silver Arrow and rose to the rank of Corporal. He owned and operated Two Brothers Lounge from 1946 to 1982. Wally was a lifetime member of the Illinois Liquor Association and a former member of the Elks and Eagles. He was a turtle. He enjoyed making people laugh and smile and was known for telling jokes. He is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Daniel and Ronald Hirstein; grandson, Matthew Hirstein; one brother, Kenneth Hirstein and two sisters, Evelyn Edgecomb and Margie Voiles. He is survived by his wife, Edna of Springfield; son, Todd (wife, Mary Anne) Hirstein of Springfield; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, John (wife, Lois) Hirstein of Springfield, Roger (wife, Del) Hirstein of WI, Richard (wife, Joyce) Hirstein of TN, Dennis (wife, Karen) Hirstein of MO and Warner (wife, Paula) Hirstein of Decatur; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A funeral ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Msgr. Thomas Holinga V.F. officiating.
