William Warren ''Bill'' Jones

William Warren "Bill" Jones, 76, of Springfield, formerly of Normal, died on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at St. Joseph's Home in Springfield. Bill was born August 20, 1932 in Moline, IL the son of Warren Dallas and Caroline Ann Smith Jones. He married Sandra Jean Austin on March 8, 1958 and to this union two girls were born; Kathryn and Kristine. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, June Harrison and Ann Monteyne. Bill graduated from Aledo High School in 1950 and enlisted in the US Navy serving three years as an Aviation Mechanic, AD2 in a Sea Plane Squadron. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University and reenlisted as an Aviation Officer Candidate and was commissioned to Ensign US Navy Reserve after preflight training. Bill then taught eight years in Streator and received his M.S. in Science, EED from Eastern Illinois University. He also completed one and a half years at the University of Wisconsin for Science Supervision. Bill earned his Doctoral Degree in Science Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1972. He taught at Metcalf, Illinois State University, from 1967 until 1993. Bill was an active member of the First Christian Church in Bloomington where he served as a deacon and served on many other Church committees. He was also a member of the EAA Chapter 129 Bloomington. Bill loved building experimental planes, flying his Air Coupe, working in his yard, cross country skiing and running. Bill is survived by his two daughters, Kathryn L. Brooks of St. Louis, MO and Kristine A. (husband, Robert) Smith of Springfield; five grandchildren, Coulton, Austin, Keely Brooks, and Megan and R.J. Smith; one sister, Carol (husband, Lee) Eyrich of Geneseo, IL; and one brother, Murray Jones of Colona, IL. Cremation has been accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Celebration of Life will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
