William M. McCarthy

William M. "Bill" McCarthy, 71, of Springfield, died at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center. Bill was born August 8, 1944 in Fort Riley, KS, the son of Cornelius J. and Marcella M. Schneider McCarthy. He is survived by two nieces and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Linda Sue Thomas. Bill was a graduate of Springfield High School and attended Illinois State University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1965 and was an active member of the American Legion Post #32. Bill was the founder of McCarthy Distributing, specializing in Harley-Davidson memorabilia. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, Chicago Bears fan, and University of Illinois fan. Bill was of the Catholic faith and was a generous supporter of local charities. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following visitation. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Graveside Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2015 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Department of Defense and the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
