

Bill was born February 21, 1929, in St. Louis, MO, the son of William A. and Irene (Trinkler) Steffen. He married Dorothy M. Fresenburg on November 20, 1948, in St. Louis, MO; she preceded him in death on March 29, 2015.
Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1947 to 1952. He received numerous ribbons and a Purple Heart during the Korean War. Bill retired from CWLP as a diesel mechanic after many years of service. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, the DAV and volunteered as a Samaritan at St. John’s Hospital.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Frances Steffen, Cecilia “Geri” Ludwig, Rose Marie Dierkes, Harold Steffen, and Anthony “Tony” Steffen.
Bill is survived by his sons, Gary (Connie), Michael (Roberta), both of Springfield, and Robert (Annaliza) Steffen of Las Vegas, NV; daughters, Ellen (James) Tremain of Springfield and Elaine (Michael) Treese of Maryville, TN; sixteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A Funeral Ceremony will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Deacon Mick Palazollo officiating.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
