With love and admiration, I remember your selfless giving; your acceptance and tolerance of others and their shortcomings; your well-thought out suggestions; your sense of humor and full belly laugh.  You were always there to help all of us, especially Mom and Dad.  My gratitude for you will be imbued in every attempt I make to live up to your memory.

 Here's to the man that loves his family   always made sure they had food  in their stomachs, clothes on thier back and a roof over their head.
Here's to a man  who worked hard every day of his life  day in and day out for 31 years to make sure he and his loved ones were taken care of.
Here's to the man that raised two big strong boys who taught them the importance of hard work and the diffrence between right and wrong.
Here's to the man that was a loving husband and was there for his wife to the best of his  ability .
So with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes I raise a shot of crown to the best father, role model and friend i could ask for.

Dear Dad,

I miss you. A lot of us miss you! There are so many words I couldn't say the last time I saw you because choking them out at your viewing was nearly impossible. So I will attempt to write them here. Because when people read these words I want them to know that you are loved, missed, and will never be forgotten. You live in our hearts forever. We carry a piece of you where ever we go. It's probably the shape of a pork chop.

I sometimes have a hard time being serious. I wanted to tease mom about kissing you with a hairy tongue and give you a wink when you checked out mom's rear...on more than one occasion I might add. I made jokes about not needing hair cuts when you began to lose your hair. I lied, telling you that food wasn't so good when it was. It was hard for me to think about how my time with you was limited when that time had just begun.

A girl couldn't ask for a better father-in-law. I love you! I will carry you in my heart forever! I will tell my children about their Grandpa Alan. How he was a great man who loved his wife, sons, siblings, nieces, nephews and friends. Who made things come alive in his hands. An artist. I will tell them that you would have spoiled them rotten. Because you spoiled me! I will watch your son become a great father because of you. Thank you for raising Jonathan! For years I prayed for the right man. He didn't have to be perfect, just perfect for me. Jonathan is an incredible man because of you and mom. I promise to take care of him. I promise to never let your legacy die!

Dad,   I wish you hadn't gotten sick.  I wish you didn't have cancer.  I wish we had more time, more memories, more projects.  I miss getting your advice and your opinion.  I liked your old-school way of thinking.  I notice things in myself that remind me of you and I'm glad (for most of them).  I want you back.  Tyler

I am deeply saddened upon just learning of Alan's passing.   “Big Al” and I were friends and running buddies in high school and shared many memories.  Alan was a great friend!    My thoughts and prayers are with the Young family during your time of sorrow.

I would like to express the sadness that I  am feeling upon learning that Alan passed from cancer.It makes no sense that the good are taken away.Thanks Alan for your life,the lives that you touched,and the memories that you left-

Patti and boys, I am saddened at hearing of Alan's passing. I will always remember the kid from Jr High who was a little shy but oh so nice. We used to laugh and joke around in Home Room at Crossland. I enjoyed working with him on several of our reunions and getting to know you, Patti. Thru the years whenever  I met a teacher from  Godwin, I would ask about Alan. Today I met one at the Manassas Farmers Market and found out about Alan's passing. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. He is missed.

My brother Alan will be sorely missed by all his friends and family.  He always made it a point to be available whenever anyone needed his assistance.  As years passed, he became the unifying touchstone for all of us, especially when our parents passed.  Obviously his family, Patti, Jonathan, and Tyler, will miss him most, but all of us have lost a truely wonderful and much loved person from our lives.  He will never be forgotten.

Patti, Jonathon, Stephanie, and Tyler - It has been many years since I last saw you, but I did know of you through Alan. We worked together at Godwin, we married the same spring, we enjoyed the many ups and downs of our early teaching career together. One that is most remebered is the love Alan shared for his family. 
Alan was kind, gentle, and he cared about all people. He loved being a teacher, and sharing his skill and knowledge with all tht would listen, and at times, those that did not.
I was always impressed and touched by his commitment to the great things life had to offer and his desire to bring that to life any way he could for everyone.

Alan will be missed, but never forgotten. May God bless you and help with this time to show you all the love that surrounds you!

Alan has always been the steadfast, strong older brother for me. He has supported me, laughed with me, set me straight at times, and offered counsel on so many issues since my parents have gone. His gifts to me far exceed his beautiful woodworking pieces and my favorite: a Christmas stocking sewn in his middle school home ec class that hangs in my home every season. He always reminded me that life is about treasured times, the love of family, and simple pleasures. Don't deny your passions, he always said, and above all, enjoy the ride...it is limited.

I love you all and pray for your peace and comfort.

I was saddened to hear of Alan's passing.
 
I will always remember the fun and laughter I shared with Alan, along with the other fathers at my first Boy Scout Summer Camp experience at Goshen in 2001 when our sons were young webelos.  The story telling around our campfire was hilarious.  Another year, Alan was so generous to open the woodshop at his school to allow our sons (and fathers) to build their Pine Derby cars.

I will miss the calm, steady influence of my older brother.  His caring devotion to our parents helped preserve their dignity through their final days.  Alan's generosity , laughter and strong family values live on in the many happy memories of our time together.  The table at which I now sit to type this message came from Alan.

Alan will be sorely missed.  He was a  great help in repairing homes on Mission trips, and a great Scout Leader.  We still have the cherry cutting board that he helped the boys make in Cub Scouts.  Our families have shared many happy times and will always treasure those memories.  With deepest condolences.

Alan was a gentle Giant. Not only because of his size but the size of his heart.
He always was willing to help anyone, he always made time. I will miss Alan because he was a special friend of mine and I will always remember the good times we had. Patti, I am sure God has a special place for Alan to rest and watch over everyone.

Alan was indeed a true friend and terrific person. We shared many good times, that I'll always remember. I'll miss him greatly and feel fortunate that he was a part of my life. Patty, you and your family have my deepest sympathy.

From Keith - It has been revealing to me to share in this heartache with the family because I have been part of the family for only a couple of years. I regret that there was not more time to get to know the man behind so many great things I see in his family and his craft. My beautiful wife has helped to know more about him and I am looking forward to seeing him again when it is time for my trip home.

From Georgeann - This is so difficult to put into words as there are just so many memories.  

I had the pleasure at the age of 16 of being in the wedding of Aunt Patti and Uncle Alan.  I remember that day and all the love. I always thought he was so cute.  This relationship was good for a young girl to watch true love take place.

So many other great memories came - from visits by them to PA, me going to visit DC, the birth of the boys (now handsome men), family reunions, birthday parties, fun at the beach and etc.  

At every event Uncle Alan would greet me with a big smile and a "hi Georgeann". I can still see that big smile and the fun we had dancing when I got married to my true love on 10/02/2010.  

My heart goes out to Patti, Jonathan and Tyler.  You are in our daily thoughts and prayers.

My heart aches from the loss of my brother-in-marriage Alan.  He has always been special to me from when we first met as he came to know our parents and family, when he married my sister Patti, and when he became a father to Jonathan and Tyler.

We celebrated many family events together.  We shared many fun, life changing, and loving memories.  In recent years, Alan was so helpful to me and aware of my needs and I loved him for it.

I will always miss you Alan but I will never forget you.  My prayers are with you Patti, Jonathan, and Tyler.  Love to all of you, Judy

i have known Alan along with his immediate family for my entire life.  He was a very well respected, family oriented individual.  It was nice to see him happy as I spoke with him at the wedding.  May the good memories of Alan carry on throught our lives.

Alan and I, had alot of good times together. Our familes shared many wonderful occassions with each other.  Alan loved to tell stories and when he did, he always got your attention.
   One summer, I remember Alan had asked me about part time work as a ground man for my Tree business.  My first thought was : could he handle the physical labor?  Being a teacher, I didn't think he would be able to handle the job but to my surprise, Alan hung in there and never missed a beat.   He was a strong man.  The bad thoughts I have of Alan are none.  He was just a super guy and fun to be around.
  As I sit here writing this with tears in my eyes and a heavy heart, my thoughts and prayers go out to his wife,Patti, and 2 sons, Jonathan and Tyler.

Alan , I will miss you........  the times I spent with you were always "good stuff".  We had some wonderful conversations over the last 14 years -  the 9 years I spent at Godwin with you and then the 5 years after that, where we saw each other at Happy Hour.  What will we do without our HH Rock?  You were a great listener, and I appreciated and valued your thoughtfulness when we were discussing something serious. You were so down to earth and I loved that about you.  And when the conversations weren't serious, it was fun to laugh with you.  I loved when you laughed - such a warm, hardy laugh. I can picture you laughing now and it brings a smile to my face.  You were a special man my friend and I will always treasure my memories with you.

I am so sorry for the loss of Alan. I pray that your memories of the years you shared, sustain you. You have such a close, wonderful family to help you through this sorrowful time. I remember when Alan gave my son Nick advice when he was taking a job in Maryland many years ago. He was a kind and wonderful man.

My brother in law Alan had the ability to laugh at himself with a hardy laugh!. He could just hang out with Patti, mother in law Hazel, sisters in law and nieces and just have fun. We could be in Ohio, PA or at the beach. Alan loved my sister Patti and sons. I loved him and will miss him so much. God Bless His Family.

There are many things I could write about Alan in the 28 years that I've known him.  I was grateful for his honesty, dedication, warmth, sense of humor and sincere friendship.  He participated in all the major events of my family's life and was always just a great, "down to earth" guy.
   The day, Jim and I, visited Alan in rehab, I clearly saw also what a remarkable, strong , insprirational man that Alan really was.  I will always especially cherish that visit and all the other memories that will remain with me.  May God be with Patti and family and all who loved and were touched by Alan.

Our deepest sympathies to you during this difficult time. Our prayers and love are with you now and always. I knew Uncle Alan since I was about 17 so a long time to collect fond memories with another Uncle. Some of my best memories were the Thanksgivings spent at my mom's and the many visits in PA at Grandma's. A more recent memory was a trip a few years ago to the Carrie Rose and a guy road trip we took to a NASCAR racing team factory where they made race cars. I attached a photo of us from that trip.
Alan will be missed and we love having him in our family. By reading the other postings it sounds like his woodworking was another way for him to share his love, we too have a baby rattle he made for David.

Patti, Jonathan and Tyler,

I deeply regret the passing of your husband and dad, Alan.  He was always a very special man to me. I met him when Patti first started working as my secretary at the Smithsonian.  He was one of the kindest, gentlest, and most thoughtful men I have ever known.  Though the years have distanced us, I have many wonderful memories of all of you.  I am sorry for what he has had to endure but am grateful that he did not have to suffer longer and that we will all see him again in heaven.

May God bring you much peace. I continue to pray for all of you.

Although Alan was my Uncle, we were more like siblings, so close in age. The photo I have posted was taken the day after the wedding - the beginning of their family. We spent many summer vacations together at Bethany Beach. The "boys" were outnumbered by us girls, We always had a great time together doing silly things and laughing together. Alan had a warm and giving heart, the boys were the light of his life. You were the connection to his heart- he loved you dearly as we loved him. Thank you for sharing him with us.

To my dearest Young cousins, and of course to Patti and family--- I was so saddened to hear of Alan's passing. As I read these remembrances left on this website, I'm struck by the same feeling I experienced at Uncle Art's funeral; namely, that he must have been quite a guy, and I wish I knew him better.  I think back to watching my dad's home movies of our annual trips to FLA which of course included the stopover in Camp Springs, and my mom bouncing baby Alan on her knee. Seeing Alan's middle name reminds me of our connection. My heart goes out to all of you...

I have so many memories of Alan, some of the first when the kids were small, and when Katie and then Tyler were born.  So many fun trips to Bethany Beach, to Grandmas, and all the times we spent at your home.  I remember when he built the play house for the boys...wow!

I am thankful that you did find the Carrie Rose and were able to spend a few years there, although not near as many as you had planned.

My sorrow for you Patti, and Jonathan and Tyler, is so great.  I cannot imagine the pain you feel.  Just know that your family is here to help carry that grief and in the future, to reflect on a wonderful past.

Since I am not in the area and my ability to travel is limited I have been told by your sisters of Alan, your and the boys courage and resolve in facing this  disease. It is very sad that, you and Alan will not have the retirement you

There are no words that can express my sadness for our loss of Alan.  You had your college years, shared many years of marriage and parenthood but I wish you had more than a taste of retirement together.

Dear Patti, John, and Tyler, 
I worked with your husband/Dad  at Godwin for the last 3 years he was there. I really enjoyed talking with him and sharing his love for woodworking. My husband does woodworking, and so I could chime in a bit. Alan always shared with me his treasures from Goodwill. His many finds of wooden bowls he was cleaning up, his WWII spoon and our trials and tribulations with life. I prayed for him very often, over the years, even when he wasn't in school. I'm so sorry to read of his leaving us. Now my prayer is that the Lord will find compassion for Alan and give him a place in heaven that only comrades in carpentry will appreciate. He was a true friend. I will miss his hugs, smiles and stories. My prayers are with you all.

Patti, Jonathan and Tyler, I am so sorry to hear the news. I think of Alan every time I walk into my grandson's bedroom. There is a beautiful wooden biplane hanging from his ceiling. He also made my Kelly a heart shaped box when she was born that still sits on her dresser. He will be missed by all that knew him. Love to all of you.

Before reading my e-mails (about Alan) this morning, I walked through the front doors of Godwin and I immediately thought of him. His presence will always be felt within these walls. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.  May you keep beautiful memories close to your heart.

I forgot we will always have a "memento" of Alan, the lovely rattle he carved for Christopher...it sits in our dining room corner cabinet with all our special things.  Not it will have even more meaning, as a reminder of a dear man.

Despite years between our times together, it always felt comfortable and we were blessed to share memories.

It is with incredible sadness that Alan has passed.  My deepest sympathy to Patti, his sons and daughter-in-law and his brothers and sisters, friends and colleagues.  May all of you find consolation in the many happy memories you have of Alan.

Our dear brother was the glue of our family keeping things together after our parents passed. He found the joy of his life with Patti which was enriched by Jonathan and Tyler. We will miss him in every turn of the season and will remember him with every Easter. Peace in his passing. With love Andrea

God has another wonderful Angel with him Patti. After working together for 25 years, my memories of Alan are many and I will cherish each of them always.  Alan was a fantastic person and friend to me and I will miss him as will many others. I would like to share one very special memory - In 1991, Alan gave me a beautiful wooden baby rattle he created when my first grandson was born.   I have that precious little rattle and it has been on display in my home for 21 years. It means the world to me and I will smile and remember Alan each time I look at it.  My prayers are with you Patti, and also with Tyler, Jonathan and Stephanie.  The world is a better place because Alan was in it.

A truly lovely man with a heart of gold.  I wish much comfort, and many happy memories of him to get you through this difficult time.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
