On October 30, 2015 of Annandale, Virginia. Preceded in death by loving wife of 62 years Liselott Ingeborg Baxter and son Robert Gustav Baxter and sister Nora Brown. Survived by brother in law Bobby Brown and family in Northern Ireland, daughter in law Susan Maria Baxter in Alexandria, Virginia, Goddaughter Peggy Trout and family Clearwater Florida, niece Christel Heinrich and family in Santa Clarita, California, niece Helga Schoenberg and family in Santa Monica, California, granddaughter Susan Jennifer Baxter in Alexandria, Virginia.
Born March 20th 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to mother Dorothy Fanny Pett Baxter and father Albert Edward Baxter. Raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Attended High School in Northern Ireland and Wisconsin, University of Maryland & Upper Iowa University, and various military schools, Management NCO Academy, Air University Officer Candidate Correspondence School.
Military service began during World War II as a Propeller Equipment Specialist for U.S. Army Air Corps from April 1944 to September 1947. Supply Technician for 31 Fighter Bomb Wing, Turner AFB, Albany, Georgia, from September 1947 to August 1948. Supply Technician supporting Berlin Airlift for 513 Troop Carrier Wing, Fassberg AB, Germany, from September 1948 to October 1949. NCOIC Supply Section for 86th Fighter Bomb Wing, Neubiberg AB, Germany, from November 1949 to April 1952. NCOIC Editing Section for 1717 Air Base Wing, West Palm Beach, Florida, from May 1952 to January 1953. NCOIC Material Control Division for HQ Military Air Transport Service, Andrews AFB, Maryland, from February 1953 to August 1955. NCOIC Base Supply for 7535 Air Base Squadron, RAF Station, Kirknewton, Scotland, from September 1955 to August 1958. NCIOC Expediter & Priorities Section for 4038 Supply Squadron, Dow AFB, Maine, from September 1958 to June 1962. NCOIC Subsistence Management Office for Detachment 29, Istanbul Air Station, Turkey, from July 1962 to September 1964. Inspector for HQ USAFE, Lindsey Air Station, Germany, from October 1964 to September 1967. NCOIC Chief of Supply for 63 Military Airlift Wing, Norton AFB, California, from October 1967 until Military Retirement in 1968.
Military decorations include Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. Air Force Good Conduct Medal. Army Good Conduct Medal with 2 Silver Loops. American Campaign Medal. European - African - Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star - Normandy. World War II Victory Medal. Army of Occupation Medal Germany with Airlift Clasp. Medal for Humane Action Berlin Airlift Bronze Silver Star Normandy. National Defense Service Medal with Service Star. Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with Silver Clasp. Air Force NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon. Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon (Air Force).
After his military service, he worked with the U.S. Geological Survey and Headquarters of the U.S. Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 1986 to enjoy the full time duties of family life.
He was Secretary of the Washington Area Marauder Men & Women (The Wammers), a chapter of the B-26 Marauder Historical Society organized to preserve the memory of the B-26 Marauder and associated service personnel. WAMM consists of veterans and anyone interested in the history of B-26 Marauders from the Washington, DC area. He was responsible for publishing the guidebook, B-26 Marauder Memorial Guides Volume I and had just completed Volume II, during an ongoing process of accumulating a comprehensive collection on memorials and monuments involving the B-26 Marauder and its service personnel.
Friends welcome on Sunday, November 8 from 1- 3 pm at Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield. A funeral service and interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on a later date to be announced.
