She lived a life marked by kindness, grace, an appreciation for beauty, and unwavering devotion to her beloved family and friends.
Brenda was the cherished wife of CAPT John Russell “Rusty” Wall for nearly 50 years, until his passing on October 10, 2016.
She was the loving mother of Jennifer K. Wall (Ron, Jr.) Smetek of Fairfax Station, VA, and Bruce Russell (Shannon Richardson) Wall of Vienna, VA. Known affectionately as “Grandma Beegee” to her eight grandchildren, she will be deeply missed by Jack, Owen, Dylan, Connor, Colin, Alexa, Daisy, and Ellie. She is also survived by her sisters, Carolyn Knaub of Portland, Oregon, and Beth Hansen of Missouri.
Brenda was born on October 4, 1943, in Charleston, West Virginia, the second of three daughters to Ivan Seymour Gladwell and Berniece Gladwell. She attended West Virginia University for her undergraduate studies and earned her graduate degree at the University of Virginia, where she met Rusty. They were married in Charleston, WV, during a snowstorm on February 18, 1967. Brenda gracefully balanced her roles as a mother, Navy wife, and Speech-Language Pathologist until her retirement from Fairfax County Public Schools. Rusty’s Navy career took their family across the country before they ultimately settled in Northern Virginia. Brenda loved to travel, especially to the beach and the calm blue waters of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a favorite destination she and Rusty visited many times. In retirement, she continued to enjoy traveling near and far, attending concerts, interior design and décor, and shopping.
A short service will be held on March 13, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel, followed by burial at Arlington National Cemetery with Rusty.
