Born in Autauga County, Alabama, on August 14, 1921, to Calvin Bracken Cobb and Ida Mae Ross Cobb, Connie grew up in the Prattville, Alabama, area. She worked at Paragon Press and later at the Veterans Administration in Montgomery where she met her husband, Arthur Marvin Ward, Jr. (Sonny). Connie and Sonny were married on March 19, 1955, at the First Methodist Church in Prattville, and in 1961, soon after the birth of their only child, Arthur “Marvin” Ward III, moved to Northern Virginia. They eventually settled in Springfield, Virginia, where they lived for the next 56 years, attending St. John’s Methodist Church, participating in neighborhood events, and building lifelong friendships. Over the years, they made many trips back to Alabama to visit family and friends, and later, in retirement, cruised to various Caribbean islands.
Connie enjoyed spending time with family and eagerly anticipated weekends at the family vacation home on Lake Anna in Mineral, VA. She loved boat rides, particularly an after-dinner cruise on the pontoon boat, and watching her grandkids water ski, wakeboard, wake surf, and tube. She was even known to take a jet ski ride on rare occasions (90th Birthday). An avid reader, Connie was particularly fond of books by authors James Patterson and Stuart Woods.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Marvin Ward, Jr. (Sonny); brother Robert Ross Cobb; sister Lillian “Priscilla” Cobb Hendricks; brother-in-law Stanton “Red” Hendricks; sister-in-law Mary Frances Ward Gray; and brother-in-law Charles F. Gray. She is survived by her son, Marvin Ward, daughter-in-law Jennifer McKinney Ward, cherished grandchildren Savannah Nicole Ward and Jonathan Stanley Ward, extended family, and many friends.
A visitation and viewing for Virginia friends will be held at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Virginia. The family will receive friends between two and four o’clock on Saturday, November 20th.
Alabama family and friends are invited to a visitation from one to two o’clock on Wednesday, November 24th, at Prattville Memorial Chapel in Prattville, Alabama. Burial will immediately follow at Prattville Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Lt. Col Jack Buckner, Quinn Barlow, Edward Lee, BJ Nave, Terry Powell, and Anthony Yarbrough.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
