
Captain Visted retired in 1987 from Active Duty in the United States Navy after 26 years of service. He became a business executive with EG&G Technical Services, Inc where he served as Corporate Vice President and General Manager for the EG&G Defense Systems and Services Group. In this capacity, Captain Visted lead over 1100 employees in 22 locations supporting all branches of the military services.
Captain Visted was born in Smithtown, New York in 1939 where he earned the distinction of being selected as the All-State and All-Long Island athlete in several sports. Captain Visted entered the United States Naval Academy with the Class of 1961. While at the Naval Academy, he was selected to the 1960/1961 All American Football Team and played for Navy in the 1961 Orange Bowl.
Upon graduation from the Naval Academy, Captain Visted remained at the Naval Academy as a graduate assistant football coach. During this time, he played in the Coach’s All-American Bowl and was the starting Linebacker for the College All-Star Team against the NFC Philadelphia Eagles in the 1961 College All Star Game.
Captain Visted’s Naval Service included a tour of duty on the guided missile destroyer USS Sellers (DDG-11) followed by a tour at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut. He was subsequently qualified as a submarine officer and awarded his dolphins. Captain Visted continued his service has ship’s crew on attack and fleet ballistic missile submarines and as the Tactical Weapons Officer on the staff of the Commander Submarine Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Captain Visted was then designated as an Engineering Duty Officer with tours of duty at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Naval Sea Systems Command. Captain Visted was then designated as a Secretary of the Navy Material Professional and served as a Program Manager for the development and deployment of multiple submarine combat systems, missile systems and sonar systems. He completed his naval career as the Program Manager for the submarine launched Tomahawk Cruise Missile.
Captain Visted received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from George Washington University and a Master’s Degree in Physics from the Naval Post Graduate School. Among his service awards are the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit with gold star in lieu of second award.
Upon his retirement from the Navy, Captain Visted embarked on a second career as an executive with a major industrial company and had significant responsibility for management, engineering and logistic support to Department of Defense activities. After his second career retirement, Captain Visted was called back to industry for a third career as a Leadership and Ethics Training Leader for more than fourteen thousand employees.
Left to cherish his memory are five children: daughter Karen Priftis of Haymarket, Virginia, daughter Stefanie Visted of Springfield, Virginia, son Colonel William Visted, USMC (Ret.) of Lewisburg, West Virginia, son Michael Visted of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and son David Visted of High Point, North Carolina. He is also survived by his sister, Josephine Terrel of Allentown, Pennsylvania and a special friend, Madeleine Powers of Annapolis, Maryland. He has seven grandchildren and four great grand children. Captain Visted was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor. Son Michael graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1996 and grandson Lieutenant Nicholas Priftis, USN graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2017.
A celebration of his life and a formal military funeral will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
