Frederick Florian Sklenar

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and proud Army soldier, CW2 (Retired) Frederick (Fred) F. Sklenar, was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 7, 1932 and died peacefully on September 23, 2021, at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He passed away surrounded by his family.

Fred is survived by his two daughters, Nicole M.-A. Engel (wife of Richard A. Engel) of Charlotte, NC, and Jacqueline C. S. Shaffer (wife of Alan R. Shaffer) of Arlington, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Teresa E. Steinmetz (nee Engel) and her husband Nicholas Steinmetz, Robert C. Engel and his wife Amanda Sanchez, and Eric A. Shaffer and his wife Renee Stepler, and his great-grandson, Jack R. Steinmetz, his pride and joy. Fred is also survived by one brother, Leroy Sklenar. Further, Fred is survived by special long-time family friends, Joan and Tom Dugan, who were like his own daughter and son.

Fred was predeceased by Elise, his wife of 56 years, his parents, William and Elizabeth Sklenar, and seven of his nine siblings.

Fred’s remains were cremated and will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Frederick F. Sklenar to Folds of Honor, the Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation, or the Gary Sinise Foundation.
