Dr. Gerald (Gerry) Ewoldt, PhD, was born in Colton, California, January 14, 1955 and died at home in Annandale, Virginia, the evening of June 16th, 2024, after a brief struggle with cancer. At his side, his wife and all-time travelling companion, Susan McCormick-Ewoldt; and his sister, Ronnie Storey-Ewoldt, who annoyed and adored him for his 69 years. As they sat with him, they considered playing his favorite Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon but opted for second favorite, Patsy Cline. As Patsy sang “If you’ve got leaving on your mind…” Gerry took his last breath.
Gerry overslept regularly in his teens; dropped out of high school (oh, how he detested high school!) and moved to Lake Tahoe and skied; was a cook, a chef and later became a ski patroller; got his G.E.D. and then earned his B.S. from U.C. San Diego and his doctorate in immunology from University of Nevada, Reno. He moved out to the East Coast for a post doc at NIH. In 1999 he started at the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner and became very involved with the union since 2004 which was something that he was passionate about. And that’s where he met Susan and began their journey together in which they shared their love of history, Scotch whiskey and travelled throughout Great Britain, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, and the U.S.
Gerry was known to be difficult or intimidating by some; thoughtful and generous by others; highly intelligent and articulate by all. Once his father moved into assisted living, he called him Every. Single. Afternoon. They talked about the stock market, the 49ers, the Rockies, and the Nati’nals.
Some of his family predeceased him: his mother, Barbara (Storey) Ewoldt; his sister, Dawn Wilson; his grandparents, Bob & Betty Gray, Hugo and Daisy Ewoldt, and Jesse and Agnes Storey. He also has one living aunt (of the 12 aunts and uncles on his mother’s side) and more than 45 cousins, many of whom are alive and kicking, mostly in the southwest U.S. His older sister, Ronnie, is alive and kicking in Denver with her esposa, Molly.
