On September 16, 2020, with her sister by her side, lifelong nurse, Geraldine Frances McCarron peacefully passed away in Capital Caring Hospice, Arlington, Virginia, after a long decline due to dementia.
Born in January 1943, in Newton, Massachusetts, she was the youngest daughter of Gerald Richard McCarron and Mary Gertrude (Quinn) McCarron. She attended Catholic schools in Newton and went on to graduate from a 2-year Nursing program. After graduation, she served the majority of her career as a med-surg nurse at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Leaving Newton-Wellesley, she went into home-health care with the Visiting Nurses Association and worked in that field until retirement. She retired in 2007 after 40 years of nursing service and moved to Carolina Shores, North Carolina to be near her younger brother’s family; where she enjoyed the beach, quilting, crafting, reading, her dog, Luci Lu, and many friends and family members in the area. She was evacuated from the area to Springfield, Virginia in 2017 when Hurricane Florence was approaching, and her dementia would no longer allow her to live safely alone.
Geri was predeceased by her parents and her youngest brother, Francis Richard McCarron (Sandi). She is survived by her older brother, Charles Anthony McCarron, of Windham, New Hampshire, and her older sister, Mary-Lou (McCarron) Mayfield (Terry). She is also survived by Nephews: Christopher McCarron (Lenie), Craig McCarron, and Daniel Mayfield, and niece, Megan Garcia (Joe), along with 4 grand-nieces and 3 grandnephews. She adored her nieces and nephews and their children. ”Mischief personified,” she spent a great deal of time having fun playing with them, joking with them, and “riling them up” before bedtimes. They were her favorite pastime. Geri loved to quilt and craft. She made quilts for each family and baby quilts for each newborn child. She also made Christmas ornaments each year for each member of the family. They will always be family treasures.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said for her at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2020, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Springfield, Virginia. There will be no viewing, Geri will be buried, after graveside services, in the McCarron Gravesite in Newton Cemetery, Newton, Massachusetts at 1:00pm on Friday, October 9th 2020. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Geri’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
