Jim was born on May 12, 1966, in Dickinson, ND to John and Ann Stein. He attended Trinity High School, and after a year at Dickinson State University, he enlisted in the US Army and became a medic. He continued his military career in the North Dakota National Guard and the US Army Reserves while completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota and then attending medical school at the University of North Dakota. After medical school, Jim returned to active duty as a commissioned officer in the US Army Medical Corps. Then, he completed residencies at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and Johns Hopkins and was board-certified in pediatrics and preventive medicine. While at Johns Hopkins, he met his wife Audrey Hackman, and they were married at Fort Meade, MD on May 25, 2002.
Jim and Audrey spent their first five years of marriage in Germany, where their daughter Alexandria (Lexi, but she would always be Alex to Jim) was born. Jim was deployed twice with the Big Red One for Operation Iraqi Freedom and served as the Deputy Division Surgeon. He returned to Germany and was selected as the Commander of the US Army Health Clinic in Bamberg. The family returned to the United States just in time for the birth of their second daughter Abigail (Abby). Jim was stationed at Fort McPherson GA and Fort Leavenworth KS before moving to the national capital region to finish his army career. After 30+ years of service, Jim retired from the US Army as a Colonel in 2022.
Jim loved Germany, traveling, golfing, skiing, model railroading, Disney vacations, and watching the Dallas Cowboys! He adored his girls and especially loved cheering at their soccer games, track meets and swim meets.
Jim is survived by his wife Audrey and two daughters, Lexi and Abby; his mother, Ann Stein; his mother-in-law, Kitty McKinney; his three sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy & Dave Holstad, Jane & Walter Botts, and Jacky & Jeff Herauf; his two sisters-in-law Karen Stein and Ruthanne Hackman; his uncle and aunts, Leo and Tillie Stein and Mae Stein; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father John Stein, his father-in-law Lowell Hackman, his brother Jerry Stein, his uncle Ray Stein, and his nephew Andrew Botts.
With deepest gratitude, we would like to express thanks to our families and friends for their unending kindness, consideration, support, prayers, and love over the years. We are also thankful for the excellent care Jim received at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and the National Cancer Institute as well as the amazing hospice care through Capital Caring Health that allowed Jim to remain at home with his family as he wished.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Jim’s name to the American Cancer Society, St Luke’s Hospital (Kansas City, MO), or Capital Caring Health (Falls Church, VA).
