Janet met her husband, James S. Crupper, at Chevy Chase Baptist Church. They were married on April 26, 1950, and moved to Springfield, Virginia to their new home in 1952 where they resided until several years ago when they moved to an apartment in Annandale, Virginia.
Janet worked as a bookeeper for the family business, Mallorey Office Supply Company of Washington, D. C.. The business was started by her father and later run by her brother.
Janet’s great joy was her role as wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, James S. Crupper, one daughter, Susan C. Edson, of Annandale, Virginia; son-in-law, Jeff Magee of Springfield, Virginia; one grandson, Steven Chase Edson (Jeannie) of Lake Ridge, Virginia; Tara Edson of Alexandria, Virginia and four greatgrandchildren: Brayden L. The other love of Janet’s life was volunteer work. She drove cancer patients to treatments for many years for the American Cancer Society and was recognized by the Cancer Society for her work. Janet was the last surviving charter member of the Woman’s Club of Springfield (General Federation of Women’s Clubs). Her 58 years as a member of the Woman’s Club of Springfield, Inc. provided her with countless service opportunities. She served as President of the Club from 1960-61, 1995-96 and as Co President with her daughter, Susan, from 2003-2005 during the Club’s 50 year anniversary. Janet helped start the Club’s Pink Elephant Thrift Shop 48 years ago. Then, as now, the Shop is run completely by volunteers from the Club. The proceeds from sales at the Shop provide funds for the Club’s many charitable works. Janet, along with other Club members, helped spearhead the effort that lead to the opening of the Richard Byrd Library in Springfield.
Janet’s honors for her Club work include the Club’s prestigious Crestwood Award for outstanding service. This award was renamed for her last year in honor of her years of service. In 1999, Janet was honored with the Bob Westmoreland Person of the Year Award by the Inter-Service Club Council of Springfield.
Janet enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several bridge groups, including one made up of members of the Woman’s Club of Springfield. She also enjoyed her computer and spreading her sense of humor amongst her online friends.
