Janice Wallen, 87, of Lorton, Virginia, passed away on 25 April 2024 in Arlington, Virginia. Janice was born on 4 October 1936 to George and Lillian Hoover in Camden, New Jersey. After Janice graduated from Fairfax High School in 1954, she went on to receive a degree in mathematics at Radford University. After graduating from Radford, Janice taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels through her career with a focus on math. On July 4 1959 Janice married James Wallen at the Oakton Methodist Church in Virginia. Janice and Jim went on to have three children. Janice was active in the Church teaching sunday school, singing in the choir, ringing in the handbell choir, teaching English as a second language and traveling on mission trips to build churches in Colorado and Alaska. She retired out of the Fairfax County School System, finishing her career at Hayfield High School. After retirement, Janice enjoyed time with family and friends and remained active in the Church. Janice is preceded in death by her mother, father and brother George G Hoover. She is survived by her husband James; their three children: Jimmy Wallen (wife Sherri), Steve Wallen (wife Joyce), and Andrew Wallen (wife Denise); ten grandchildren: Daniel (wife Amelia), Jaclyn (husband Jake), JD (wife Ashley), Zach, Hannah, Tim, Jonathan (wife Tyra), Phoebe (husband Randy), Chloe (husband Derek), and Abbie; and six great grandchildren: Blake, Bryce, Maddie, Fiona, Bentley, and Riley. Visitation services will be held at First Baptist Church, Springfield, VA on 3 May at 9:30 AM and will be followed by funeral services at First Baptist Church, Springfield at 10:30 AM. After the funeral service, burial will be at the National Memorial Park, Falls Church, VA at 12:00 PM. The reception at First Baptist Church, Springfield will immediately follow the burial. Arrangements are by Demaine Funeral Home. Flowers and cards may be sent to First Baptist Church, Springfield, VA (7300 Gary St., Springfield, VA 22150). Please have the florist deliver them on Friday before 9AM. Janice was a strong and loving person who invested herself in her family and in the mission of the Church to share Christ’s redemptive message. She also invested her life in her students leaving behind a legacy of passion for learning and unwavering dedication to shaping young minds.
