John Daniel (JD) Gray rode off into the sunset on January 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy woven with words, wisdom, music, service, and an untamed spirit. A poet, scholar, gentleman, musician, hopeless romantic, cowboy, and a proud veteran, JD lived his life with a rare blend of intellect and grit, always seeking beauty in the written word, a well-played melody, and the open horizon.
JD dedicated 20 years of his life to serving his country as a United States Air Force officer, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. As a Master Missileer and a Master Officer Aircrew Member with over 3,400 flying hours, he embodied precision, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to duty. Whether soaring through the skies or ensuring the security of the nation, he served with honor and excellence, earning the respect of all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan, who passed in 2017. Though his heart ached in her absence, he carried forward with the love they shared, finding solace in family, poetry, music, and the simple joys of life.
JD is survived by his mother, Wilma Jean Munson, whose strength and wisdom shaped the man he became. He also leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his songs, stories, and steadfast spirit—his daughter Beth and her husband Patrick Picardo, his daughter Amy Stieler Gray, and his grandchildren Marco and his wife Akanksha Picardo, and Mason Picardo. His great-granddaughter Emilia, the newest branch on his family tree, carries forward the warmth and love that JD so freely gave.
JD’s life was a symphony of adventure, deep thought, and boundless love. Whether strumming a tune by firelight, reciting poetry, debating philosophy over wine, or reminiscing about days spent under wide western skies, he lived each moment with passion. A cowboy in spirit, he understood that life, like a song, is a mix of wild notes and steady rhythms, always worth playing to the end.
His words, melodies, and legacy of service will echo in the hearts of those who knew him. His influence will endure in every stanza of poetry, every cherished memory, every note he played, and every lesson he imparted.
Ride on, JD. The horizon is yours, and the music never ends.
