

Joseph Henry Sherick, formerly of Shady Side, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Joe was a devoted husband to Alice who passed away in 2012. He is survived by his children; Michael, Mary Ann Ingberg (Scott), Joseph (Jean Byrne), Stephen (Trudy), Matthew (Isabel), Margaret (Roger Beattie) and John. Joe was a much loved “Poppop” to his grandchildren Emily, Kiri, Joseph, Ramona, Alley, Zeke, Jessi, Kyle, Isabelita, Carlos, and his eight great grandchildren. Joe was born in Philadelphia, PA, son of Harry and Margaret Sherick. He was preceded in death by his sisters Margaret, Mary and Helen. He served in the U.S. Navy (Pacific Theater) during World War II. He graduated from Temple University and Temple University Law School. After law school, Joe and family moved to Annandale, Virginia. During his federal government career Joe served in many roles in the Department of Defense before his confirmation as the first Inspector General of the Department of Defense in 1983. The annual “Joseph H. Sherick Award” continues his legacy of recognizing those who contribute to the mission of the Inspector General. Upon his retirement, Joe and Alice relocated to Baltimore where he volunteered as a member of the Baltimore Police Auxiliary Division.Joe moved to Greenspring Village in 2013. He was involved in many activities there and truly enjoyed his time as part of their welcoming community.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Greenspring Chapel in Springfield, VA on Tuesday, July 7th at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Greenspring Village Scholars’ Fund.

The Scholars’ Fund provides college scholarships for exceptional high school students who have worked at Greenspring in their Dining Services. The scholarship assists with undergraduate expenses.
