

On Thursday, October 6, Louis R. “Bob” Baker passed quietly in his sleep. He was 93.
Bob was born in Alborn, Minnesota and raised in Superior, Wisconsin, the youngest of four children. He received a BA degree from Superior State College (now University of Wisconsin – Superior) and a MA degree from the George Washington University. He was married to Doris Jeanette Hays in 1942, shortly after which he entered the US Army where he rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After military service in World War II, he began a career in the US Civil Service, working for several government agencies. He retired from the US Information Agency as a Deputy Director in 1977 after 36 years of government service.
He was active in the Masonic order where he served as Worhipful Master of George C. Whiting Lodge of Washington, DC and later as Grand Master of Masons of the District of Columbia. He was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star, where he served as Grand Patron of the District of Columbia, and later as a Worthy Patron of Sharon Chapter of the O.E.S. in McLean, Virginia.
Mr. Baker is survived by his son, Bruce R. Baker and daughter-in-law, Darie Donovan, of Stamford, Connecticut, and nineteen nieces and nephews. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 19 at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, Virginia from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Memorial services will be in the Demaine chapel at 10:00am on Thursday, October 20th, followed by a brief graveside ceremony at National Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Masonic Foundation of the District of Columbia, c/o The Grand Lodge of F.A.A.M of the District of Columbia, 5428 Mac Arthur Boulevard NW, Washington, DC 20016.
