Marie Reining Schacher

Born Maria Concetta Liggera on March 15, 1936 in Poughkeepsie, NY, she departed this earth Friday, December 13, 2019 after a brief illness. She was the eldest child of Giacomo Liggera and Katherine Arborio Liggera. Marie graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1954 and attended Connecticut College, New London, CT. In 1956 she married Robert R. Reining Jr., and soon began a career as a US Air Force wife, homemaker, and mother. Later in life she embarked on a career as a US government employee holding various positions at the Department of Energy and the Department of the Interior. Marie served as a White House liaison for the U.S. Park Service under the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. In 1981 she married Richard A. Schacher who was the love and joy of her life for 38 years. Together they traveled the world and enjoyed many sails on the Chesapeake Bay, summers in Truro MA, and bridge games. Marie is survived by her husband, Richard A. Schacher; her son, Robert R. Reining III (Lydia A.); daughter, Christine Reining Sanders (Ernest D.); grandchildren Katherine Grace Sanders, Paul Hayden Sanders, Emma Rose Reining and Robert Lewis Reining; and step sons Scott A. Schacher and Jay A. Schacher. Services will be private, held at a later date. If inclined, donations in her memory may be made to the Humane Society or any charity of your choice.
