

Sue was born in Elizabeth City, NC to Benjamin Pool Bagley and Dora Blanchard Bagley. She went to school in Elizabeth City, NC. She graduated from East Carolina Teacher’s College, in Greenville NC in 1952. She married Rudy B. Meekins on Dec. 13, 1952 in Elizabeth City NC. Sue worked as a primary teacher in both Arlington and Fairfax County Public School systems. She retired from Fairfax County having helped many youngsters and their parent over years. Sue took time off from teaching in order to raise her two children. She returned to teach when Bryan, her firstborn, went to college.
Sue was very active in various positions within the Annandale United Methodist Church (AUMC). She took a class on teaching exercise for seniors and then taught an exercise class at AUMC for many years. Sue was involved in the AUMC Lydia Circle that served the community of Annandale. Annandale Community Christians for Action (ACCA) benefited from her leadership. Sue participated in the couple’s retreats and the Emmaus programs within the church. Sue went on mission trips to Russia, traveled with Rudy and Bible leader Burnett Thompson to Greece and areas around the Black Sea. She traveled to Israel, held Monday evening Bible Study for decades and joined Rudy in the Wednesday morning Prayer Breakfast for over 40 years. She was a woman who was a witness for Jesus Christ to her family and friends and whoever else she met.
Sue is preceded in death by her mother and father and many aunts and uncles as well as her grandmother, all who helped raise her since her mother died when Sue was only 7 years old.
Sue is survived by her husband, Rudy B. Meekins, Sr.; two wonderful children, R. Bryan Meekins, Jr. (Suzanne Meekins); their daughter Elaine Meekins Wood (Larry Wood), Sue’s only granddaughter Casey Elaine Meekins, Rudy's sister Hazel M. Hare, two cousins who became like younger sisters, Sandra Lyday and Sherry Avery (Ray Avery) and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Demaine Funeral Home at 5308 Backlick Road in Springfield, VA 22151. The viewing time will be on Friday night, April the 1st from 6-8PM.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 2nd at Annandale United Methodist Church located 6935 Columbia Pike in Annandale. Services will be led by Reverend Clarence Brown. Burial arrangements are being made for internment in Arlington Cemetery and that date is not yet known.
Memorials may be given to Annandale United Methodist Church, Assist Pregnancy Center, or ACCA in memory of Sue. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, Godwin House Hospice organizers and the many caregivers and owners of Amada Senior Care that have provided tender love and assistance over the past 3+ years of her illness.
