Michael Samuel Meuleners COL, USA (Ret.) of Haymarket, VA, passed away on October 25, 2024 at the age of 77 after a courageous battle with a rare cancer. Beloved husband of 48 years to Bette Meuleners, who he met on a blind date planned by mutual friends and family. Mike married Bette the following year and he immediately welcomed Bette’s two small children, Henry (Shawn) and Melissa as his own. He later welcomed children Michael (Scott) and Bethany into the family. He is also survived by grandkids Lindsey, Sarah, William, Ryan, Thomas, Matthew, Jonathan, Michael, Luke and Max. He was preceded in death by his parents Wilbert and Kathryn “Lois” Meuleners and his sister Barb, who passed away in 2020.
Born in Minneapolis, MN, COL Meuleners graduated from West Point in 1970 and served in the US Army Corps of Engineers for 30 years. While in the US Army, Mike received many prestigious assignments including commanding a Combat Engineer Battalion in the 7th Infantry Division in Fort Ord, California as a Lieutenant Colonel and commanding the New England Engineer District in Boston, Massachusetts as a Colonel. While serving in the Corps of Engineers, he earned 3 Master’s Degrees, Operations Research from Stanford University, Industrial Engineering from Stanford University, and an MBA from Long Island University. His last assignment in the US Army was as the Missouri River Region Deputy Engineer, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). He and Bette lived the true military life in 12 different states and 2 different countries. Following retirement from the Army, he worked for an environmental engineer consulting firm, ECC, for over 15 years. He enjoyed staying connected with his West Point classmates and the many special friends he made through his travels.
An avid golfer, COL Meuleners was proud to have played over 300 rounds in 2019, enjoyed playing yearly with his West Point Classmates and volunteered at many PGA events. Memberships he held included the United States Golf Association (USGA), Army Engineer Association (AEA), Association of the US Army (AUSA), West Point Association of Graduates (AOG), and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). He loved traveling around the world with Bette and his happiest times were spent with her, his children and their spouses, and his grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2024 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd, Springfield, VA 22151. The family will share a prayer and special memories at 5:30pm. COL Meuleners will be interred with Full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, March 3, 2025 at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Folds of Honor at www.foldsofhonor.org or VCS Cancer Foundation at www.vcscancerfoundation.org. Folds of Honor is a nonprofit organization that helps provide the families of fallen and disabled service members and first responders educational scholarships. Mike was a true supporter of this organization and participated in countless golf tournaments benefitting Folds of Honor. He would be proud to know that donations made in his honor were continuing his support of Folds of Honor. The VCS Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organization created by the physicians at Virginia Cancer Specialists to provide supportive services to cancer patients receiving treatment from Virginia Cancer Specialists and NEXT Oncology during clinical trials. Mike was participating in a clinical trial with NEXT Oncology. He would be proud to know that donations made in his honor would support patients in clinical trials furthering research on rare cancer treatments.
The family is hoping to honor his memory by hosting a Memorial Golf Tournament in Spring 2025.
