Of Manchester NH and Springfield VA on June 19 2013, Flip passed from complications of COPD at the age of 85. Loving husband of Mary M. (Salter) Filipowicz; caring father of Peter (Sue) Filipowicz, Debbie (Gary) Reed, Mitch (Eileen) Filipowicz, Sue (John) Jenkins, and Matthew (Margot) Filipowicz; brother of Josephine Reilly, Mary Dalton, Charles Filipowicz, and Joseph Filipowicz; grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of 2. Flip proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 20 years, retiring a Chief Petty Officer in 1964. Following his enlisted career, he worked for Navy Department another 20 years at BUPERS in IT Management. Flip was a giving man, and volunteered at things he loved throughout his life - during the early days at the Springfield Little League and BSA Troop 856, later as a foster parent for 35 years at Catholic Charities, and finally nearly 4 decades as a member of the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department. Cut from the cloth of a great generation, he remained dedicated, unassuming, tolerant, witty and very clever until his last moments. Gatherings to celebrate Flip’s life will occur on Saturday June 29, 2013. The Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church (10:30am); Remembrance at Demaine Funeral Home (2:00 to 5:00 PM); and Reception at the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department (6:00 to 8:00 PM.) Memorial and inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Flip’s memory to the American Cancer Society or the GSVFD.
