The patriarch of our amazing family, died peacefully at the age of 74 on December 18, 2020 at 9:30 am, surrounded by an amazing care team at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Sadly, the family was not able to be with him at his time of passing due to the fact he passed as a result of Covid-19. That being said, the team at the hospital did an amazing job coordinating a Zoom call with Dad the night before his passing so that we were able to share our final goodbyes, I love yous, and putting all of our hearts at peace.
Raymond was born on July 26, 1946, in Alexandria, VA and graduated from George Washington High School in 1964. Raymond was drafted in December, 1965 to the U.S. Army, having proudly served in the Vietnam War from 1966-1967. Upon his return, he was honorably discharged. He spent his professional career working in the telephone industry for both Western Electric and Verizon. He loved living in the family home of more than 46 years in Bren Mar Park, and loved his many neighbors that were his friends and family.
Raymond had a personality and a heart larger than life, always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors. He could light up any room and could tell a story like no other. He passed on to his children his love of all sports – often coaching David in soccer and Little League, and driving Valerie to her dance classes while also making sure she could shoot free throws with proper form. Not only did Raymond pass down his love of sports, but also his love of music. We are so blessed that he shared that love with us. He enjoyed bringing Valerie to various rock concerts when she was a young child. He also enjoyed going to see his favorite band, The Fabulous Hubcaps, whenever he could. Up until his final moments, he was participating with his weekly lunch bunch and he was dancing and listening to local bands at restaurants with great friends doing the things that brought him joy.
What brought Raymond the most joy though were his three grandsons and two (step) granddaughters. He loved attending their sporting events, spoiling them for Birthdays and Christmas alike, and coming down for Sunday dinners to be with the family! He truly loved his son-in-law Joel, and his daughter-in-law Debbie, knowing that his children found the loves of their lives. We were so blessed to have a perfect last Thanksgiving with him just a few short weeks ago. That was our true blessing.
At this time, there will not be formal services to remember our dear Father and Grandfather. With him having passed from Covid-19, it would break our hearts if any of our friends, family, or dear neighbors were to be exposed to the dreadful virus. We will be having an immediate-family graveside service and hopefully can celebrate his life with family and friends when it is safe to do so. Thank you so much for caring about the man who meant the world to us!
Raymond is survived by his children, Valerie Lynn Westphal and David Michael Maxwell both of Manassas, VA; his son-in-law Joel Corey Westphal Sr, his daughter-in-law Debbie Jean Maxwell, his grandsons Joel Corey Westphal Jr., Justin Charles Westphal, and Travis Michael Maxwell, his (step) granddaughters Alyssa Nicole DeGuzman and Samantha Renee DeGuzman, his brother John (Kathryn) Maxwell of Verona, Ohio, his sisters Susan Maxwell Owens of Wabeno, WI and Marsha Marsh of Alexandria, VA, his sister-in-law Cheryl Jelliff of Watkins Glen, NY, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Suzanne, and parents Raymond T. Sr. and Ruby Thomas Maxwell.
Graveside services will be private.
