Rosemary Hewlett Carle, a resident of Alexandria VA, died Sunday, January 16, 2022.
She was born April 9,1925 in Aurora, Missouri. After graduating from Drury College she went on to receive a Masters in Biology from Wellesley College. She met her future husband, Birdsall N. Carle, M.D. during their years as researchers at the National Institutes of Health.
After their marriage, Dr. Carle's work took them many places: Louisiana, Kentucky, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and back to New Mexico. Over those years, in addition to being a scientist, Rosemary brought an artist's eye and an open heart to every home and community where she and her family lived. Her love of nature showed in her native gardening, her quilting and her collection of animals and insects. She was a well-loved and active member of local Episcopal parishes and P.E.O. chapters in every community where she lived. She nurtured curiosity and compassion in her children. To the end of her life, she delighted in her friendships - old and new.
She is preceded in death by her husband Birdsall, parents Judson and Flora Hewlett, her sister Nancy Jane and a grandson, Sean Patrick.
Left to celebrate a life well-lived and a mother and friend sorely missed are children, Christopher, Deborah and Molly (WA state), Robin (VA), Claudia (CO) and Kathleen (AZ). ten grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
" All shall be well, all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well."
Due to the current COVID situation, a memorial service will be planned for friends and family at Goodwin House Alexandria at a later date.
