Sylvia M Buonincontri

Sylvia Buonincontri, 96 years old, formerly of South Ozone Park, NY, passed away peacefully at her home in North Springfield surrounded by her loving family on April 10, 2021. She was born, along with her twin brother Tony, in Brooklyn NY to Mateo and Maria Concetta Legaz on January 13, 1925. On June 6, 1953, she married the love of her life, Alfred “Freddy” Buonincontri of Glen Cove, NY. They were married for 48 years before he passed in 2001. Although she worked as a legal secretary at the start of her career and an administrative assistant for the Board of Veterans Appeals for seven years (after her baby went to college), the job she was most proud of and that brought her the most joy was that of mother and then grandmother. She raised four daughters and then spoiled four grandchildren. Sylvia resided in North Springfield for over 60 years. Besides singing in her church choir, she was very involved in local singing groups, the Spiritones for 10 years and then with the Wakefield Chorale for 30 years, where she was secretary and frequent soloist. She loved to sew and craft and made lots of clothes for her children and grandchildren and sequined ornaments that she gave as gifts and that also filled her Christmas tree. Sylvia is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, parents Mateo and Maria Concetta Legaz, siblings John, Paul and Joe Legaz, Wilma Gherbaz and her beloved twin, Tony. She is survived by daughters Diane Buonincontri, Joanne Buonincontri, Susan Leone and Carolyn Smith, sons-in-law, Ray Leone and Tom Smith, grandchildren Evan and Ryan Smith, Emma and Nicolas Leone, soon-to-be granddaughters-in-law, Spencer Hiday and Madison Nowak and many, many friends. Visitation will be from 5 – 8pm on Friday, April 23 and 9 – 10am on Saturday, April 24 at Demaine Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, April 24 at St. Michael’s Church in Annandale VA. Burial will follow at Fairfax Memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
