Walter was born at 418 N. Payne St. in Alexandria on October 8th, 1921, to Chancellor E. and Emma G. Hammersley. He grew up in Alexandria and graduated from George Washington High School. When WWII started, he joined the Navy and spent most of the war in the Pacific theater.
In January of 1948, he married the love of his life, Elinor Killeen. They were happily married for 67 years until her passing in 2015. He is survived by his two children, Jim (Sara) and Kathleen (John), four grandchildren, Stefan (Lacy), Adriana (Matt), Michael (Katrine) and Genevieve (Sean) and three great grandchildren, Logan, Max and Nora.
Friends and Neighbors are invited to join the family for the burial Rite of Committal, to be performed by Rev. Msgr. Robert C. Cilinski, Pastor of Nativity Catholic Church, at 12:30 pm at:
