

Warren Earl Moore, age 91, passed from this life on April 11th, 2015. . Earl, as he was commonly known, was born in Parsons, West Virginia on February 13th 1924, the son of Hamilton Ray Moore and Flossie Corcoran. He is preceded in death by his brother Ansell Moore. He is survived by Mary, his wife of over 70 years; daughter Elizabeth (Betty) and George White of Queenstown, MD; sons John (Bess) of Springfield, Virginia; Joseph (Laura) of Coronado, California; and Mike (Angela) of Alexandria, Virginia. Mary and Earl were blessed with 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Earl, as he was commonly known, was born in Parsons, West Virginia on February 13th 1924, the son of Hamilton Ray Moore and Flossie Corcoran. The farm boy of Sleepy Hollow, West Virginia graduated from Parsons High School in 1941. At age 17, he left Tucker County with 25 cents in his pocket and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. His various assignments included Baer Field in Madison, Wisconsin and Barstow Airfield in Florida. He was trained as a radio mechanic and worked on the P-51 Mustang Fighter planes throughout the war. In a twist of fate that had far reaching consequences, a hernia operation prevented him from deploying to the Philippines; where his unit was captured by the Japanese and forced to participate in the Bataan Death March.
He married Mary Mosco of Davis, West Virginia on January 20th, 1945. After the war he worked for Capitol Transit Company as a streetcar conductor in Washington, DC. He completed police academy training and served 34 years with the Virginia State Police from 1953-1987. Despite a long commute from northern Virginia to Davis several days a week, they chose to raise their four children while Mary cared her father. After his father-in-laws passing, they moved to Alexandria, Virginia in 1968.
His police assignments intersected several historic events in the Washington, DC area. As part of the State Police security detail, he accompanied Scotland Yard and the Secret Service on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Jamestown and Williamsburg in 1959. His duties also included security detail at Arlington National Cemetery during President Kennedy’s funeral and internment in 1963. He was assigned as a police escort to Virginia Governors Godwin, Holton and Robb. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living State Trooper in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
After his from the State Police, he worked as a police officer for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and security officer for Dunbar Armored Air. As a currency security officer for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, DC, he accompanied the air transportation of large sums of money to Federal Reserve Banks throughout the United States.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of St. Thomas Catholic Church, the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Davis, West Virginia.
Visitation and rosary will be at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Virginia on Wednesday, April 15th from 4-8pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Louis Catholic Church, Alexandria, VA on April 16th at 10:30 AM, with reception to follow at the Church. He will be received in a celebration Mass at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Thomas, West Virginia on Friday, April 17th at 1 PM, with Rite of Committal and Final Commendation to follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Thomas, West Virginia.
