 I have fond memories of going deer/squirrel hunting and fishing with him and also trying to learn a little bit of his incredible ability to fix things.  I know my Dad really appreciated his knowledge and enjoyed learning from him.  I can still remember hanging out at your house to either work on things or just visit.

I always admired both Syl and Lu, family gatherings were great and I always felt very welcome in their home.  I know Syl worked for Ted and Martha in his youth and they enjoyed his work ethic.

Syl and Lu were a very loyal and devoted couple.

My memories are of all the pot luck times we spent together. The good food naturally, the laughter and the games we played and laughed about. I miss all who are gone. I wish we could turn back the clock and start over.

Ron had always been very close to Syl.  He admired him very much.  Syl taught Ron a lot of  different things and was alway very helpful when Ron needed him.
They enjoyed hunting and fishing together.
Ron was so close to Syl that he asked him to be his best man in our wedding.
Only Syl got back at him and showed up for our wedding with a red tie and  claimed that was what they sent him.  It through Ron for a short time then Ron caught on it was a joke.  We will cherish that memory.
We both will missed him.

I remember when I was 9 & 10 watching my brother comb his hair.  He would comb the top back, push in the waves and check it out.  If it didn't suit him, he would do it over, sometimes quite a few times.

Years later, we didn't have a phone and he and Don Glenn would want to talk, so they would get into their cars and drive to the other house, passing on the highway.  When they got to the other house, they wouldn't know whether to take a chance on passing on the way back to their house.  Eventually, Syl got a phone and that ended that.

Lu and Syl Luecker were two of my parents' closest friends. They and 10 other folks socialized throughout the year despite living many miles apart in north and south St. Louis, the Metro East and in Washington, Mo. The Lueckers' deaths had special meaning for me because they were the last in their "gang" of friends to die; my mom was the first in a 1976 car accident.

My dad and I were numb with shock and loss after my mom's death. I was just 15 years old and a high school sophomore. But even at that young age, I quickly realized what a godsend these friends were to my dad. In losing my mom, he lost his very best friend and companion. These wonderful folks did everything they could to help him recover. They phoned him frequently and included him in every barbecue, dance, meal out and on overnight weekends on the Gasconade River in Washington. Sometimes they INSISTED he attend even when he lamented being the odd man out without a spouse. These events not only pulled him out of the house -- they gave him something to look forward to weeks in advance. They provided the social, same-age support that I couldn't as a busy teenager with friends and activities of my own. It's what he needed most.

When my dad remarried in 1988, the gang welcomed Polly with open arms, too. In turn, she loved every one of the members and their many get-togethers. These folks also supported her for three years as she cared for my dad while he fought cancer and congestive heart failure. He died in 1997, she in 2011 after moving to Canton, Mo., to be closer to her children and grandkids.  

My dad would be the first to say he barely knew a hammer from a wrench, and he marveled at Syl's mechanical know-how. "He makes it look so easy and is so modest," my dad said of him as he took on a room addition or big repair job. My mom spoke often of Lu's kindness, recipes and "calm nature with three kids!!" as she raised just her one child. 

Lu's death brings closure to this terrific group of people. I was proud these folks attended my 1987 wedding, and I enjoyed keeping in touch with them every Christmas. I'm left with an "end of an era" emptiness but am so, so grateful for their love and warmth the past 50+ years. 

Their sincerity, conscientiousness and consistency set a shining example for my own life and family.

Syl was my oldest cousin on both sides of my family.  When he was dating Lu, he often came to our house to get cleaned up after work before they would go out.  When they were going to get married, there were some new houses built on the street behind ours.  they bought one, behind us and two doors down.  Steps were built over our fence so it made it quick to go back and forth until more houses were built.  My Mom thought Syl knew everything and could fix anything! So, of course, I did too since Mom did.  I was eleven when he married Lu.  I was a young teenager when Syl was at the house while I was ironing clothes.  He asked if I would like to iron Lu's blouses (she was still working) and he would pay me.  Wow, getting paid for something I loved to do!  Syl tried to teach me to dance.  It was easy with him as he was a really good dancer, but not so easy with others.  It was nice having a relative so close to us and I believe we helped each other.

I first got to know them when I started dating Don Glenn back in 1952.  He and Syl were good friends and were confirmed together with Don's brother Earl and Art Meier at Concordia Lutheran Church in Granite City, Illinois in late 1930's.

We often went out dancing together with other couples at Collinsville Park Ballroom and other places where local musicians played (Joe Ladd) was one of them).  Did waltzes, polkas, even some jitterbuggin' - lots of fun! 

Went on some overnite visits to several places and boat ride down the Mississippi. (Some of these were after we had kids and they were older - my memory is not as clear as it once was).   We also visited each other with family occasionally.  I'm not sure when we started getting together regularly every two months with 

Art, Billie Meier and Mel and Doris Nierdieck  as a "Potluck Group" - where the hosts provided the entree and the others brought veggie, salad or dessert.  That went on many years, continuing after our kids were grown and on their own and then Ruth joined us later This got more difficult after losing Don and Doris in 1998, Art in 2014, and Syl in 2016, and now Lu in 2018.  That leaves Mel, Billie and me - and we are not getting any 
younger (and Billie and I don't drive to St. Louis).!!!   I feel very fortunate that we were able to  have such a good group of friends for so many years!

Dad was my rock -- whatever thing I needed, he was there for me. Car maintenance, repairs, fixing anything. In later years gardening was a shared hobby - from the backyard plot to the pumpkin patch at the "farm".

We are so sorry were out of town when we heard about Mr. Luecker. As our neighbor for 15 years he always amazed us when he would take apart an entire car with all the parts in the driveway put it back together and drive it away!  So considerate by quietly rolling his truck down his driveway and not starting it until  he was on the street. Our first child, Matt, loved it  when he would come home from work and play ball with him across our fence. Special memories.  Our sympathy to the entire  family.  Your are in our thoughts and prayers.

Syl was a very caring person.  He knew all about cars, could wire electric, repaired anything you would give to him.  He taught my first husband so many things and never refused to help.  Jerry would spend hours talking to him about mechanical problems at work and Syl always had a solution.  He was loved dearly by family and friends and will be missed.  But God called him home and he's no longer in pain.  RIP dear friend, Linda Binkley and Kari Luecker
