Clyde Anthony Bender, age 97, passed away on May 25, 2024 surrounded by family. He was born on April 6, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan to his late parents Arthur Sr. and Agnes Bender. Clyde was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Olive and special friend Marge Brooks. He is survived by his loving children: Cynthia (Mike Walsh) Barstow and Craig (Susan Cordell) Bender; daughter-in-law: the late Lori Bender; his dear grandchildren: Alessia (Joel) Berlin, Joshua (Hillory Dever) Barstow, and Nicole (Tyler) Austin; as well as his great-grandson: Edison Berlin; his sister: Carol (Mary Ellen McClanaghan) Meyers; and brother-in-law: Reverend Ron (the late Lenore) Scott. Clyde was also preceded in death by his brothers: Arthur Jr., Donald; sister: Monaclaire; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Doris (Bob) Scott and George (Jill) Scott.
Clyde was drafted into the Army in 1952 and stationed in Germany. Olive later joined him and Cindy was born in Germany. He worked for Taystee Bread and retired after 33 years. Clyde and Olive enjoyed traveling throughout their lives. He was an avid golfer and played golf well into his 90’s every week with Craig. He was a strong family man, a welcoming soul, and enjoyed having a good time with his friends and family.
Clyde was a member of the VFW Bruce Post 1146 and the American Legion. Donations in Clyde’s honor may be made to the Leader Dogs for the Blind or the VFW Bruce Post 1146. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the VFW Bruce Post 1146, 28404 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores. A luncheon will be held immediately following.
