David Harold Phillips, known as Dave to family and friends, age 72, of St. Clair Shores, Michigan passed away on May 24, 2025. He was a proud veteran, skilled tradesman, and beloved friend and leaves behind a legacy of hard work, camaraderie, and quiet joy in life’s simple pleasures.
Dave was born in Detroit, Michigan and came of age during a turbulent time in American history. He grew up in St. Clair Shores and remained there most of his life. After graduating high school, he entered the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict era. Though he considered himself lucky to never serve overseas, he was immensely proud of his military service, viewing it as a defining chapter of his life and a duty he was honored to fulfill. Dave was also an active member of AMVETS Post 121 in St. Clair Shores, where he found community, laughter, and lasting friendships. The stories told and memories made there were among the most treasured parts of his later years.
Following his time in the service, Dave returned home and pursued his education at Macomb County Community College, where he trained in tool and die trades. This marked the beginning of a lifelong career working with his hands — a natural fit for someone with Dave’s precision, patience, and creativity.
Dave had a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. His love of woodworking was more than a hobby — it was a passion. Whether building something functional or simply beautiful, he could often be found in his wood shop, surrounded by sawdust and contentment. He also had a profound love for the outdoors, finding peace and renewal out on the water fishing or in the woods. His cherished cottage in Gladwin, Michigan, was a sanctuary where he fished, relaxed, and made memories with family and friends.
A devoted foodie and self-declared soup connoisseur, Dave found joy in the kitchen. He loved cooking for others, experimenting with recipes, and sharing meals that brought people together.
Those who knew Dave will remember his quiet strength, generous spirit, and unwavering loyalty. He lived a life marked by dedication — to his country, his craft, and the people he loved. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Dave is survived by his brother, Steven Phillips, as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends who were like family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Florence Phillips, sister Jeannette Powers, and brother Danny Phillips.
A visitation will take place on Friday May 30, 2025 from 2-8 PM with a White Clover Service at 7 PM, at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores, MI 48081. Following on Saturday, May 31, 2025 a brief gathering will begin at 10 AM, and go until time of funeral service at 11 AM, also at Kaul Funeral Home.
