I remember Mr. Matlock from DSHS. (I was a student from 1990-1994.) I wasn’t a student of his, but he always said “Hello” when I’d pass him in the hallway. I’m praying for all of his family & friends—- May God give all comfort and peace during this time- wrapping his arms around you and keeping you safe in the palm of his hands. God Bless!

I remember Mr. Matlock's classes well. I took 4 years of his classes, in the beginning freshman year Art 1 was thought to be just an easy grade. I loved his class so much I went back all 4 years. So many memories of how he encouraged each of us to use our imagination on our projects and to make them our own. Senior year was my greatest year in his class. Had lots of friends, lots of memories. YACA convention stands out for me. He encouraged me to go to the Art Institute of Atlanta. Was a great experience. He had such an impact on my life I invited him to my Boy Scout Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Truly one of the great teachers and always smiling and encouraging his students. I often stayed late or showed up before school just to have good conversation about not just Art but life. Will always remember him. Prayers for family, friends, and all influenced by his life.

Took 2 years of Art. Art 2 and 3 shared a class. I Was always a C average student...
Art 3 always had the best assignments.
Loved this class and always took part in the Art 3 projects, even though I was in Art 2. Rightfully so he graded me poorly for never doing my Art 2 projects. I realized during the last weeks of senior year I needed a C in Art 2 to graduate high school. The last week of my senior year he told me to do all the major assignments and he would pass me. I did every project for that entire school year and handed them to him in the parking lot, out the window of my vehicle, while leaving on the last day of school. He gave me a C and I graduated. Best teach ever, and really fun to work with. He is honestly the reason I graduated.

So sadden by this news! Mr. Matlock taught me in 1999 & 2000, but his lessons live on forever. He's the only teacher I ever went back to visit and soon became an art teacher myself. He was always so caring and easy going, truly a great guy.

I worked with Mike for many years. He was a true original. He was also thoughtful and caring and funny. I rarely saw Mike when he didn’t have a smile or he wasn’t doing something to help someone. He was a great colleague and a wonderful friend.

I joined the art club without an ounce of artistic abilities just to spend more time with friends. My mother was losing her cancer battle at home and I desperately needed a distraction. Matlock told me that my lack of talent didn't matter and that anyone could appreciate art, asked me to become more involved in the club, and encouraged me to run for YACA secretary. I did and not only won, but remained active with the club for my last 3 years of high school. His classroom was a safe space for me and so many others. After my mother passed, I ran into Mike in the hallway after a particularly embarrassing exchange with another teacher. He asked me about my tears and told me small minds discuss people, but great minds help one another. As the weeks passed and rumors circulated, I repeated that phrase over and over in my mind and eventually those rumors faded just as he'd promised. Thank you Mike for sharing your wisdom with children like me who weren't even your students. I owe my love of art to you and I wish there were more teachers like you.

My wife Vera taught with Mike for many years. I got to know him as well. Always a jovial person, a great art teacher who was loved by his students, if not necessarily the administration. He went his own way, and marched to his own drum caring only about bringing the appreciation of art to a bunch of country boys and girls who can now look back with appreciation for the cultural enrichment he brought to their lives. All of us were better for having known and loved Mike.
