Lorraine Côté Stinson

Née le 30 décembre 1937 à Montréal, Lorraine était la plus jeune de deux enfants d’Imelda Bernard et Arthur Côte. Le père de Lorraine, Arthur, est décédé lorsqu’elle était une jeune adolescente, et sa mère s’est ensuite remariée avec Everest Mercier, vivant ensemble pendant plus de 50 ans, tous deux atteignant leurs 90 ans.

Lorraine s’est mariée jeune et n’a pas perdu de temps pour fonder une famille. À l’âge de 23 ans, elle était déjà mère de trois enfants. Malheureusement, son mari, James Stinson, est tombé malade, passant fréquemment de l’hôpital à la maison, et elle a souvent dû élever ses enfants seule. Vivant avec l’aide sociale et l’assistance de ses parents, il était néanmoins très difficile de joindre les deux bouts.

Déterminée à subvenir aux besoins de sa famille, Lorraine a décidé de reprendre le travail. Elle a travaillé chez Bonimart (Towers) jusqu'à la fermeture de l’entreprise, puis a rejoint Horizon (Eaton’s). Après quelques années, elle a été transférée chez Eaton’s à St. Bruno. Elle adorait travailler dans le département du linge là-bas et a finalement été promue responsable du département. Elle pensait que c’était l’endroit idéal pour travailler jusqu'à sa retraite. Malheureusement, en 1991, après 25 ans de service, Eaton’s a fermé ses portes. Elle a continué à travailler, d'abord chez Sears, puis au Linen Chest où elle a travaillé pendant plus de 20 ans jusqu'à l’âge de 85 ans.

Elle appréciait toujours lorsque ses vieux amis ou les amis de ses enfants s’arrêtaient au magasin pour lui dire bonjour. L’un de ses clients préférés était Jean et Elise Béliveau. Ils ont d’abord tissé une relation à Eaton’s où Mme Béliveau demandait toujours les recommandations et conseils de Lorraine. La relation a continué au Linen Chest, et Madame Béliveau a donné son numéro de téléphone à Lorraine, l’encourageant à l’appeler. Lorraine n’a jamais eu le courage de l’appeler, mais à une occasion, elle a mentionné à M. Béliveau qu’un de ses petits-enfants était fan des Canadiens. M. Béliveau lui a envoyé un paquet de souvenirs des Canadiens et l’a appelé pour son anniversaire. C’était une belle relation.

Fièrement indépendante, demandant rarement de l’aide aux autres, Lorraine a vécu seule jusqu’à cette année. Elle appréciait toujours les visites de ses enfants, petits-enfants, et prendre ses arrière-petits-enfants dans ses bras. Elle adorait voir les nouvelles photos des bébés.

Au fil des ans, Lorraine a été bénie d’amis proches tels que Nicole, Billie, Mary, Mallou et Carole. Elles ont partagé des vacances aux Caraïbes, en Nouvelle-Écosse, en Gaspésie et à Toronto. Grandes cyclistes, Nicole et Lorraine partaient en aventures à vélo d’une journée.

Lorraine a précédé son mari, ses parents, et ses beaux-frères et belles-sœurs Peggy et Bernice dans la tombe. Elle sera affectueusement souvenir de ses enfants – Jim (Lorraine), Bob, et Chantal (Gerald); ses petits-enfants – Jesse, Meghan, Danielle (Brad), Robyn, Katie, Karel (Philipe), Katia (Fred), et Justin (Amélie); et ses arrière-petits-enfants – Calvin, Elliott, Edward, Adaline, et Zachary; ainsi que son frère Richard (Collette).

Bien que le séjour de Lorraine à la Maison de Soins Marcelle-Ferron ait été bref, nous tenons à remercier le personnel pour les soins et la compassion montrés à notre mère.

La Célébration de la Vie de Lorraine aura lieu le 14 juin (de 14 h à 16 h) à la maison funéraire Collins Clarke MacGillivray White au 307 Rue Riverside, Saint-Lambert, QC J4P 2H7.

Au lieu de fleurs, des dons à la Fondation Marcelle Ferron seraient appréciés. La journée avant son décès la fondation a offert à notre mère un massage des mains pour la calmer.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Lorraine Côté Stinson on May 28th, 2025 in her 88th year.

Born December 30th, 1937 in Montreal, Lorraine was the youngest of two children to Imelda Bernard and Arthur Côté. Lorraine’s father, Arthur, passed away when she was a young teenager and her mother later married Everest Mercier spending over 50 years together, both living into their 90s.

Lorraine married young and wasted no time starting a family. By the time she was 23, she was a mother to three children. Unfortunately, her husband, James Stinson, fell ill, spending time in and out of hospital and she was often left to raise their children alone. Living on welfare, and with some assistance from her parents, it was still very difficult to make ends meet. Determined to provide for her family, Lorraine decided to go back to work. She worked at Bonimart (Towers) until it closed and then went to Horizon (Eaton’s). After a few years she transferred to Eaton’s in St. Bruno. She loved working in the Linen Department there and was eventually promoted to Department Manager. She thought this was the perfect place to work until retirement. Unfortunately, in 1991, after 25 years of service, Eaton’s closed its doors. She continued working, first at Sears and then the Linen Chest where she worked for over 20 years until she was 85.

She always appreciated when her old friends or her children’s friends stopped by the store to say hello. One of her favourite customers was Jean and Elise Beliveau.

They first developed a relationship at Eaton’s where Mme. Beliveau always asked Lorraine’s recommendations and guidance. The relationship continued at the Linen Chest and Madame Beliveau gave Lorraine her phone number, encouraging her to call. Lorraine never felt comfortable calling but on one occasion mentioned to Mr. Beliveau that one of her grandchildren was a Habs fan. Mr. Beliveau sent him a package of Habs paraphernalia and called him for his birthday. Such was their relationship.

Fiercely independent, rarely asking others for help, Lorraine lived on her own until this year. She always enjoyed visits with her children, grandchildren, and holding her great-grandchildren. She loved seeing new photos of the babies.

Over the years Lorraine was blessed with close friends such as Nicole, Billie, Mary, Mallou.and Carole. They shared vacations to the Caribbean, Maritimes, Gaspe and Toronto. Avid cyclists, Nicole and Lorraine would go on day-long cycling adventures.

Lorraine was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her siblings-in-law Peggy and Bernice. She will be lovingly remembered by her children – Jim (Lorraine), Bob, and Chantal (Gerald); grandchildren – Jesse, Meghan, Danielle (Brad), Robyn, Katie, Karel (Philipe), Katia (Fred), and Justin (Amélie); and great-grandchildren – Calvin, Elliott, Edward, Adaline, and Zachary; as well as her brother Richard (Collette).

While Lorraine’s stay at Marcelle-Ferron Nursing Home was brief, we would like to thank the staff for the care and compassion shown to our mother.

Lorraine’s Celebration of Life will be held June 14th (2:00-4:00 p.m.) at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home at 307 Rue Riverside, Saint-Lambert, QC J4P 2H7.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Fondation Marcelle Ferron would be appreciated. The day before our mom passed away the Foundation Marcelle Ferron offered our mom a hand massage to calm her.
