David Isaac Katz, age 92, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025 at Amana Colonial Manor. The youngest child of Jacob and Marge “Minnie” (Cytron) Katz, Dave was born on Feb 17, 1934 in St. Louis, MO.
Dave was a beloved uncle, architect, and military veteran who had a generous heart and loved animals.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, and their children: Martin Richman (Lisa) of Leawood, KS and children Michael and Brian; Eric Richman of St, Louis; Suzanne Richman (Peter) of Berlin, Vermont and child, Aaila; Shelly Sher and children Anna and Coby, Phil Blumenfeld (Joyce), and Gregg Blumenfeld (Dee).
He was married twice but had no children. He was preceded in death by his third love, Jeana.
Dave was especially proud of his military service and his work as an architect. One of the things he thought most important to design was that it embrace beauty. He mentioned once that the buildings he designed would last longer than him and hoped they would stand as a memorial to his work. He loved art in all forms and had eclectic taste in music, from jazz to rock to country.
Dave said later in life that he had come to realize the importance of verbalizing how he felt to his loved ones. He had a big heart, and not just for his family but for anyone in need. He held a special place in his heart for shelter animals, therefore in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dave’s memory to the Open Door Sanctuary, the largest no-kill animal shelter in Missouri.
