It was only this morning that I learned of his passing and I am so saddened by this news. Don Brennan was a powerful, intense human being, who was incredibly alive. 

I first met him when I was a graduate student at SLU and he was eager to become the Graduate Dean. Serving as President of the Graduate Student Association, my fellow officers and I were granted permission by Fr Biondi to interview all the candidates; it was immediately obvious that there was no one better qualified to serve in that important role than Dr Don Brennan! He was awesome. Bright, cheerful, serious, funny, loyal, dedicated, and forever honorable, he and I became good friends as we shared our investment in the graduate education experience. I admired him.......respected him, and thought he was nothing short of fabulous.

We stayed in communiucation long after I earned my degrees. My last contact with him last summer was same as ever -- energized! He so obviously loved and adored his wife and daughters.....I loved hearing his stories about each one of them -- he beamed with pride and love for them. He loved his garden and loved talking about it. He loved life. He was one of my first guests on my Internet radio show.......he was fabulous. 

Generous, kind, visionary.....I could write all day about who this man was to me, how he guided, led, and helped so many graduate students, how he has a legacy that he humbly didn't understand was his.........he was just a great person, he is a great person......and I am sorry, so very sorry for his beloved family. Marty, he adored you.....loved you and your girls so obviously. My heart aches for your sorrow.

Don was a classmate of mine at both McBride and SLU and I was shocked and sadden to hear of his untimely death.  Don was an exceptional person and will be missed.  My condolences to his family, Mark Bell

Just three years ago, Don gave a eulogy for my father, Dr. George Newberry.  He spoke beautifully, and I cherish the memory of Don's comforting words at my dad's service.  I remember Dr. Brennan and Marty coming to our house for dinner every so often, and how we all enjoyed each others' company.  My sympathies to your family, he was a great man and this is a great loss to us all.

Marty, Don was one of our favorite persons.  He was always up for a big hug, great story and huge laugh.  Some of my best memories of SLU are going to your house for the holiday party.  We very much enjoyed your home and hospitality, the drinks too.  All of us will miss his wit and smile.

Marty,  So sorry to hear about Don.  I did not know him well (especially after Tom Kramer and I moved to Florida) , but he always impressed me as the friendly, ever smiling and engaging Irishman. It was a privilege and an honor to work with Don.  His smile knew no bounds and his compassion for those around him and SLU was immense.  He will be so greatly missed.   Our thoughts are with you Marty and the whole family.

One of my fondest memories of Dr. Brennan occurred on Halloween day (my first in the department).  Dr. Brennan was known for his high-jinx and Halloween pranks but I didn't know it at the time.  I was steadily working away at my computer when I noticed a strange gnarled, clawed fingered hand creeping around the door frame of my office.  Soon the bloody head of a monstrous being was peeking through the door way.  No sounds emerged, other than heavy breathing.  I squealed "who is that!" to which I received no response and the being disappeared.  I jumped up and ran to the door to see where the figure ran off, trying to discern who it might be, but didn't see a trace of it anywhere up or down the hall.  I later learned this was one of Dr. Brennan's favorite holidays and he would frequently 'dress up' for it.  I never learned how he disappeared from the Verhaegen Hallways so quickly!  I will never forget that day.  He was a unique and lovable boss.  Dr. Brennan was committed to the research programs at SLU and supported faculty and staff in their pursuit of funding.  I truly regretted the decision to spin off of the Division of Research  knowing I would lose him as my boss.  We are blessed to have known Dr. Brennan and Saint Louis University has lost a devoted son.    I pray that his family received solace knowing that Dr. Brennan touched so many in positive ways.Bridget Turner

Don was a good man, always someone you looked forward to be around.  I know of no one more loyal to SLU.  His life is to be celebrated, as that is what he would have wanted.  God bless Don and his family.  Jerry & Connie Fritz

Being with Don always brought a smile to my face --- he was a good man. This is a tremendous loss to SLU as well as to his family and friends.  Marty, know that my prayers are with you and your family.

The SLU community has lost a true ambassador and role model. Don was a great leader, administrator and friend. I and countless students, faculty and staff will miss him dearly, but always remember him fondly. My heartfelt condolences to the Brennan family.

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad, Erin... He was such an awesome Dad to you and your sisters.  I will always remember him being around for our Volleyball games, his advice he gave us as young teenagers, his love for your Sanibel Island trips, and most of all~ his genuine smile.  My heart is with you and your family... I know, personally, that this is such a difficult time in life.  Time will feel as if it's standing still, however, life is for the living and your Dad will want you to smile as your path continues with him in your heart. I love you.
