Jan was born in St. Louis, MO on October 8th, 1951, to John Edward O’Malley and Anna Mae (Ryan) O’Malley as the fifth of eight children. At 7 years of age her family relocated from St. Louis, MO to Vichy, MO to land that her family would turn into a farm. Jan learned the value of hard work from both of her parents and her siblings while tending to the farmstead. She grew up surrounded by a big, loving family.
From the family farm, Jan attended Harrison Center School through the 8th Grade and then graduated from Belle High School in 1970. She went on to study at University of Missouri-Columbia.
Jan began working in restaurant management in Rolla for Pizza Hut. She subsequently relocated to Jefferson City, MO to manage their highest volume location in the state. By the mid-1970s she became the first female Regional Manager within the Pizza Hut organization. She went on to manage restaurants in Houston, TX and St. Louis, MO. She later became manager of a Printing Shop for the PIP national chain.
Jan postponed her working career to become caregiver to aging family members including her Uncle Anthony, her Aunt Margaret as well as her Dad and Mom. This would lead Jan to return to school to become a Registered Nurse for many years in the Orthopedic Ward at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Louis. She took great pride in the patient care she provided and in following all the health safety procedures. When her own health problems no longer allowed her to work as a nurse, she volunteered to provide daycare for children of several family members for years. She served as Treasurer of the O’Malley Cemetery Association for many years.
Her Catholic faith remained important to her throughout her life.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents John E. O’Malley, Sr. in 1988 and Anna Mae O’Malley in 1996. She will also join in heaven her late brother-in-law, Bob Weber and sister-in-law, Karla Joy O’Malley.
She will be greatly missed by surviving family, including her siblings Mary (O’Malley) Boyer, Thomas O’Malley and his wife Sandra, Joseph O’Malley and his wife Donna, Linda (O’Malley) West and her husband Garry, Barbara (O’Malley) Weber, John E. O’Malley, Jr., and Anthony O’Malley.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members and friends.
Jan was known for being an incredibly selfless and thoughtful friend, sister, and aunt. Although she never had her own children, Jan treated her many nieces and nephews like her own. She also spoiled the many dogs that were lucky enough to live with her through her life – Andy, Sam, and Angel.
Jan leaves a void in our lives, but we will forever remember her as a caregiver, her jovial personality and intense love for her family.
