Joanie passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. She was a devoted wife to the late Eugene Kraus for over 65 years, adored mother and mother-in-law to Judy Grand (David) and Jeffrey Kraus (Jocey). Loving grandmother to Coby Grand (Arielle), Ryan Grand, Gabe Grand (Hannah), Brad Kraus (Polly), Grant Kraus (Kayla), Hayley Blum (Brad). The greatest G-Nana to Noa and Leo Grand, Bond, Teddy, and Nell Kraus, and Charlie Blum. Dear aunt, cousin and friend to many.
Joanie was born and raised in St. Louis, the youngest child of Abe and Anna Miller. Sister and sister-in-law to the late Alice Riezman (Sam), Donald Miller (Merle), Myrna (Jerry) Sokolik.
Joanie graduated from University City High School. Upon graduation she went to Washington University where she met Gene at a ZBT fraternity party. They started dating and were later married in 1956.
As a little girl, Joan loved ballet, and throughout her life she found joy in music—especially listening to Frank Sinatra. She also loved playing bridge and often late into the night with her bridge group.
Joanie and Gene were St. Louis sports fan. They enjoyed cheering on the Hawks, holding season tickets for the Football Cardinals, and following her beloved Cardinals baseball team.
Joanie was an affectionate mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose greatest joy was her family. She loved any reason to gather—holidays, birthdays, or simple dinners out—whether at a favorite pub or Tony’s, as long as she was surrounded by family. Joan also had a sharp eye for fashion and was known for her timeless sense of style. She carried herself with grace and elegance that matched her warm spirit.
She will be remembered for her love of family, her enthusiasm for life’s celebrations, and the warmth she shared with everyone around her.
Funeral service Monday, October 6th, 12:00 Noon at Congregation Temple Israel, #1 Rabbi Alvan D. Rubin Drive (Ladue and Spoede).No visitation prior to service. Interment Beth Hamedrosh Hagodol Cemetery.
